  • Creating Awareness

    Employees

We realize that many of our employees have questions about our sustainability program and wish to contribute to its success. To keep them apprised of our success and future plans, there is a frequent feature in Insight, our internal employee newsletter. Additionally, we ensure that all program announcements and updates are made available on myIndigo, our company's intranet site, and our employees are encouraged to send comments and suggestions.

Our Internal Communications team is an integral part of this initiative continuing to gauge the level of awareness about our company's environmental programs. We realize that our employees want to be brand-wide ambassadors of our efforts and it is our responsibility to keep them informed and engaged.

Indigo recognizes that our employees are also concerned about the environment. To encourage sustainable mass transit options, we offer discounted TTC passes to our Home Office (Toronto) employees. The program was officially launched in September 2008. This was complemented by installing bike cages in 2009. As well, HO employees have recently adopted electronic pay statements to continue to reduce paper and over 80% of employees have adopted this paperless alternative.

Our employees are also proud supporters of the WWF-Canada CN-Tower Stair Climb and have been active participants for the last 2 years. By climbing the 1776 stairs to the top, Indigo’s employees have raised over $23,000 to support WWF’s conservation programs.

    IndigoGreen Teams

During Environment Week (2011), Indigo launched IndigoGreen Teams, a national program that offers a meaningful way for interested employees to assist in sustainability initiatives at work and at home by identifying and effecting positive change in areas of waste management and recycling, energy efficiency, product donation, and community engagement. In tandem, Indigo also launched The IndigoGreen Guide, to assist in setting the foundation for IndigoGreen Teams to start, nurture and grow their environmental teams, and advice on how to track initiatives and share best practices at all 247 store locations from coast to coast.

  • Forest Facts

Many Canadian forests are of global ecological significance. The temperate rainforest, which stretches along the British Columbia coast, comprises one-quarter of the world's remaining temperate rainforests (David Suzuki Foundation).

The northern boreal forests cover 35% of Canada's land mass - stretching from Newfoundland to the Yukon - and represents the largest contiguous intact forest remaining on earth (David Suzuki Foundation).

Did you know that there are three main forest types on the planet? These are temperate, boreal, and tropical.
