  • Indigo's Environmental Paper Policy

To reach our goals, we've set ambitious targets and adopted a range of progressive practices. Our environmental paper policy favors the use of post-consumer recycled paper in our paper purchases.

    Our Internal Paper Objectives:

    • By 2012, Indigo will achieve an average of 30% post-consumer recycled content in Indigo copier and printer paper; corrugated packaging products; catalogues and marketing materials within 12 months, 40% within 24 months, and 60% within 5 years.
    • We're benchmarking our current paper consumption and measuring our efforts to reduce it. By 2012, we will reduce our use of paper by 25%. We're also working with individual vendors and the publishing industry to reduce over-production by the industry, and to ensure they get more out of the paper they use.
    • While we give preference to high-recycled content paper, Indigo recognizes the importance of better forest management practices. So, for paper products containing virgin fibre, Indigo will favour those that are eligible for labelling according to FSC standards. To learn about FSC certification, please go to: fsccanada.org

    Our External Paper Objectives

Indigo created its paper policy as a catalyst for change in the way that books are printed and to work with the publishing community to use more environmental papers in its products. To facilitate this change, Indigo has established a number of targets and publishers will strive to attain the following standards and time lines:

    Vendor Product Objectives

    Post consumer recycled paper content
    for UNCOATED books and magazines

    20% in 12 months

    30% in 24 months

    50% in 60 months

    Post consumer recycled paper content

    10% in 12 months

    20% in 24 months

    Post consumer recycled paper content
    for marketing and packaging

    20% in 12 months

    40% in 24 months

    60% in 60 months

Please note that Indigo has incorporated its Environmental Paper Policy into its Vendor Terms of Trade Agreement.

  • Forest Facts

Many Canadian forests are of global ecological significance. The temperate rainforest, which stretches along the British Columbia coast, comprises one-quarter of the world's remaining temperate rainforests (David Suzuki Foundation).

The northern boreal forests cover 35% of Canada's land mass - stretching from Newfoundland to the Yukon - and represents the largest contiguous intact forest remaining on earth (David Suzuki Foundation).

Did you know that there are three main forest types on the planet? These are temperate, boreal, and tropical.
