Indigo Fast Facts
Indigo Books & Music Inc. (TSX: IDG) launched its first store in Burlington, Ontario in 1996 with a desire to bring a unique cultural destination and experience to the Canadian retail marketplace. In August 2001, following a merger with Chapters Inc., the company expanded their bookstore locations to all ten provinces and one territory in Canada. Indigo is now Canada's largest book retailer and the third largest in North America. As at December 26, 2009, Indigo operated 249 stores including 96 superstores under the banners Indigo, Chapters and the World's Biggest Bookstore, and 151 small format stores under the banners Coles, Indigo, IndigoSpirit, SmithBooks and The Book Company. The Company also offers the popular online site, chapters.indigo.ca, which offers a choice of more than one million products including books, CDs, DVDs, toys and more.
A keen understanding of the customer has prompted Indigo to maintain the core business while enhancing other categories like IndigoKids and Gifts. This focus on the customer was also integral to the design and functionality of new customer friendly in-store kiosks, and the launch of the now 250,000+ member online "community." Along with the online business of chapters.indigo.ca, Indigo has become Canada's ultimate booklover's destination. In 2009, Indigo launched Kobo - a leading destination for eReading. Headquartered in Toronto, Ontario, the Company employs over 6,500 people across Canada.
Indigo and Chapters ranked number one and number two in 2009 for Customer Affinity on the annual Mass Market Retailer Report by Kubas. Both banners have been on this coveted list for a decade. Sustaining high levels of employee engagement is also important to Indigo and as a result, the Company has committed resources to specific initiatives designed to solidify Indigo as one of the best places to work achieving best-in-class employee engagement status through a Hewitt study in 2009.
In 2004, Indigo founded the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation, a registered charity whose mission is to provide new books and creative learning materials to high-needs elementary schools, enhancing the literacy and self-esteem of students in Canada. Visit
