Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from "Love at first read" This book became an instant favourite with our son when it was given to him as a Birthday present. It has been read so many times it is falling apart! I have to confess, it has become one of my favourites too!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a really fun book My grandchildren have this book and can hardly stop laughing. It is extremely well written and offers a healthy dose of humour. It is a particularly fun book to read just before bed as it leaves them feeling very positive (and doesn't take forty-five minutes to read through.) It is also a book which I find requested to be read over and over again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A book that inspires your imagination This book is a bit unusual in that it has very few words, but what we've found is that we end up telling the story to our daughter just a little bit differently every time we read it. As our daughter's gotten older, we've started to encourage her to make up the story to go along with the pictures. I love that the book encourages my daughter (and me!) to be a creative story-teller. Lots of fun!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful Story This has become a toddler favorite in my house. Children learn the words quickly and love to 'read' along. I consider this a 'must have' childrens book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Night Gorilla Great book for preschoolers. Say goodnight to each of the animals - excellent bedtime reading. Lots to identify on each page (i.e. name the animal), or look for (i.e. watch for the balloon on the first page float throughout the rest of the book). Silly but relaxing fun.

About the Author

Caldecott-medalist Peggy Rathmann was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, and grew up in the suburbs with two brothers and two sisters. "In the summer we lolled in plastic wading pools guzzling Kool-Aid. In the winter we sculpted giant snow animals. It was a good life." Ms. Rathmann graduated from Mounds View High School in New Brighton, Minnesota, then attended colleges everywhere, changing her major repeatedly. She eventually earned a B.A. in psychology from the University of Minnesota. "I wanted to teach sign language to gorillas, but after taking a class in signing, I realized what I'd rather do was draw pictures of gorillas". Ms. Rathmann studied commercial art at the American Academy in Chicago, fine art at the Atelier Lack in Minneapolis, and children's-book writing and illustration at the Otis Parsons School of Design in Los Angeles. "I spent the first three weeks of my writing class at Otis Parsons filching characters from my classmates' stories. Finally, the teacher convinced me that even a beginning writer can create an original character if the character is driven by the writer's most secret weirdness. Eureka! A little girl with a passion for plagiarism! I didn't want anyone to know it was me, so I made the character look like my sister." The resulting book, Ruby the Copycat , earned Ms. Rathmann the "Most Promising New Author" distinction in Publishers Weekly's 1991 annual Cuffie Awards. In 1992 she illustrated Bootsie Barker Bites for Barbara Bottner, her teacher at Ot
