      Average rating: 4/5

What The Dog Saw: And Other Adventures

      By Malcolm Gladwell

Little, Brown And Company | October 20, 2009 | Hardcover
What is the difference between choking and panicking? Why are there dozens of varieties of mustard-but only one variety of ketchup? What do football players teach us about how to hire teachers? What does hair dye tell us about the history of the 20th century?

In the past decade, Malcolm Gladwell has written three books that have radically changed how we understand our world and ourselves: The Tipping Point; Blink; and Outliers. Now, in What the Dog Saw, he brings together, for the first time, the best of his writing from The New Yorker over the same period.

Here is the bittersweet tale of the inventor of the birth control pill, and the dazzling inventions of the pasta sauce pioneer Howard Moscowitz. Gladwell sits with Ron Popeil, the king of the American kitchen, as he sells rotisserie ovens, and divines the secrets of Cesar Millan, the "dog whisperer" who can calm savage animals with the touch of his hand. He explores intelligence tests and ethnic profiling and "hindsight bias" and why it was that everyone in Silicon Valley once tripped over themselves to hire the same college graduate.

"Good writing," Gladwell says in his preface, "does not succeed or fail on the strength of its ability to persuade. It succeeds or fails on the strength of its ability to engage you, to make you think, to give you a glimpse into someone else''s head." What the Dog Saw is yet another example of the buoyant spirit and unflagging curiosity that have made Malcolm Gladwell our most brilliant investigator of the hidden extraordinary.

    2. The Prophet

      The Prophet

      By NA

      September 15, 2011 | Hardcover
Sing and dance togetehr and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone, Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music.
So speaks Gibran's prophet Almustafa, on the eve of his return to his homeland after a 12-year exile in the city of Orphalese. Entreated by its inhabitants to impart of his wisdom before quitting their shores, Almustafa delivers a set of short and deeply profound discourses on aspects of life and the human condition, including love and marriage, work, commerce and laws, and pain and death.
Written in 1923 by Lebanese philosopher Kahlil Gibran, and since translated into over 40 languages, The Prophet is as enduring as it is popular. The ideas it expresses in spare and poignant cadences are ever more fitting as our daily lives become increasingly cluttered and chaotic. Starkly and strikingly beautiful. The Prophet is a testimony to life and love.

      ART OF WAR

      By SUN TZU

      April 1, 2012 | Hardcover
This book has been produced using traditional Chinese bookbinding techniques, using a method that was developed during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and remained in use until the adoption of Western binding techniques in the early 1900s. In traditional Chinese binding, single sheets of paper are printed on one side only, and each sheet is folded in half, with the printed pages on the outside. The book block is then sandwiched between two boards and sewn together through punched holes close to the cut edges of the folded sheets.

It is an unusual book that was written 2500 years ago in an impenetrable classic language and yet figures on the recommended reading lists of the United States Marine Corps. More unusual still for it to be a favorite book of figures so contrasting as General Douglas MacArthur and Mao Zedong; but Sunzi's Art of War is such a book. Moreover it has discovered a new life outside military circles in the world of modern business management. A simple internet search under 'Art of War + business strategy' will provide hundreds of sites claiming to offer invaluable commercial insights based on this ancient text.

Heidegger And A Hippo Walk Through The Pearly…

      By Thomas Cathcart

      Viking USA | June 6, 2011 | Hardcover
From the authors of the bestselling "Plato and a Platypus Walk into a Bar," an uproarious new book on the meaning of death (and life, too)
The new book by the bestselling authors of "Plato and a Platypus Walk Into a Bar" is a hilarious take on the philosophy, theology, and psychology of mortality and immortality. That is, Death. The authors pry open the coffin lid on this one, looking at the Big D and also its prequel, Life, and its sequel, the Hereafter. Philosophers such as Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, Camus, and Sartre have been wrestling with the meaning of death for as long as they have been wrestling with the meaning of life. Fortunately, humorists have been keeping pace with the major thinkers by creating gags about dying. Death's funny that way--it gets everybody's attention.
Death has gotten a bad rap. It's time to take a closer look at what the Deep Thinkers have to say on the subject, and there are no better guides than Cathcart and Klein.

    2. Lost Books Of The Bible

      Lost Books Of The Bible

      By NA

      May 15, 2012 | Hardcover
The documents in this book were written soon after Christ's Crucifixion, during the early spread of Christianity. But when the Bible was compiled in the end of the fourth century, these texts were not among those chosen. They were suppressed by the Church, and for over 1500 years were shrouded in secrecy.
These writings are by and about many of the important figures in the New Testament. They express much the same zeal and earnestness about their subject as do the pieces in the New Testament. And yet, until they were translated in their entirety, they were the peculiar esoteric property of the clergy and other learned people, available only in the original tongues.

    1. Jesus: A Story Of Enlightenment

      Jesus: A Story Of Enlightenment

      By DEEPAK CHOPRA

      HARPERCOLLINS PUBLISHERS | September 8, 2010 | Hardcover

The New York Times bestselling author of Buddha captures the extraordinary life of Jesus in this surprising, soul-stirring, and page-turning novel. Uncovering the transformational "lost years" that are not recounted in the New Testament, Deepak Chopra has imagined Jesus's path to enlightenment moving from obscurity to revolutionary, from doubt to miracles, and then beyond as the role of the long-awaited Messiah. As a teenager, Jesus has premonitions of his destiny, and by the end, as he arrives to be baptized in the River Jordan, he has accepted his fate, which combines extremes oflight and darkness.

With his characteristic ability for imparting profound spiritual insights through the power of storytelling, Deepak Chopra's Jesus portrays the life of Christ as never before, ultimately leading us closer to understanding the nature of God and the soul. As the author shares, "I don't want the Jesus in this book to be worshiped, much less to push him forward as definitive. The events of the tale are pure fiction. But at a deeper level, the Jesus in this book feels real because we've gotten a glimpse into his mind. One flash of insight answers many prayers."
