About the Author
Maribeth Mellin is an award-winning journalist who
has covered various aspects of Mexico for more than two decades.
Her experiences there began with a long backpacking journey in the
1970s that took her from Baja to the tip of the Yucatán Peninsula.
She covered the U.S.-Mexico border as a senior editor with
San
Diego Magazine and as a contributor for the
Los Angeles
Times, then left full-time employment when a publisher asked
her to write a book on the coastal resorts of Mexico. Since then,
Maribeth has authored or contributed to more than 20 travel books
about Mexico and has received the prestigious Pluma de Plata award
for her writing about the country. She also has authored books on
Costa Rica, Peru, Argentina, Hawaii, and San Diego, where she lives
just a few blocks from the beach with her husband, Gary. Her
writings on social, legal, and medical issues, along with her
travel articles, have garnered more than two dozen awards from
journalism organizations.
Jane Onstott earned a bachelor's degree in
Spanish language and Hispanic literature from San Diego State
University, with a year's study in Madrid. Since then she has lived
and traveled extensively in Mexico and Latin America. She worked as
head of the Communication and Information office of the Charles
Darwin Research Station in the Galápagos Islands, and has worked as
a Spanish-language interpreter and translator in Mexico and the
United States. Jane has collaborated with colleague and friend
Maribeth Mellin on several books, including San Diego Best
Places (Sasquatch Books, 2002) and The Insiders' Guide to
San Diego (Globe Pequot Press, 2004). A San Diego resident,
Jane travels to Mexico often to work for a variety of travel
publications. Her book National Geographic Traveler Mexico
describes the country's culture and history and gives information
about its most fascinating cities, towns, beaches, and
