About the Author
Bill Goodwin is one of the world''s experts on
travel to Fiji and the South Pacific. Before falling in love with
the islands, he traveled widely as a decorated officer in the U.S.
Navy and was an award-winning newspaper reporter for the
Atlanta Journal, which sent him to Washington, D.C., as a
political correspondent. He then served as legal counsel and
speechwriter for two influential U.S. senators-Sam Nunn of Georgia
and the late Sam Ervin of North Carolina. In 1977, he and a friend
sailed a 41-foot yacht from Annapolis, Maryland, to Tahiti. He left
the boat in Papeete and, with girlfriend and backpack, spent more
than a year exploring French Polynesia, American Samoa, Samoa,
Tonga, Fiji, New Zealand, and Australia. After another stint with
Senator Nunn and a year in Hawaii, he researched and wrote the
first edition of
Frommer's South Pacific in 1986-87. He
also is the author of
Frommer''s Tahiti & French
Polynesia and, at home,
Frommer''s Virginia. Visit
