Against the Raging Sea: Stories from the Golden Age

In 1995, Atlantic literary historian John Bell explored the golden age of the sea story in the groundbreaking anthology Atlantic Sea Stories. In this welcome new collection, he continues his explorations, offering another selection of classic tales by Frederick William Wallace, Archibald MacMechan, Theodore Goodridge Roberts, Arthur Hunt Chute, and other neglected masters of the sea story. Whether portraying the everyday struggles of fishermen and other Atlantic mariners, or more extraordinary events such as disasters at sea, these authors all brought to their writing a striking immediacy that was often based on first-hand experiences. Their memorable stories capture the drama and adventure of seafaring life in the Atlantic region during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Editor and writer John Bell is descended from a long line of New England and Nova Scotian mariners.
