Alive: The Story of the Andes Survivors

by Piers Read

HARPERCOLLINS PUBLISHERS | June 1, 1979 | Mass Market Paperbound

On October 12, 1972, a plane carrying a team of young rugby players crashed into the remote, snow-peaked Andes. Out of the forty-five original passengers and crew, only sixteen made it off the mountain alive. For ten excruciating weeks they suffered deprivations beyond imagining, confronting nature head-on at its most furious and inhospitable. And to survive, they were forced to do what would have once been unthinkable ...

This is their story -- one of the most astonishing true adventures of the twentieth century.

    Survival to the Extreme!

    David Cavaco

This real life tale of the survival of a group of Uruguyan rugby players atop 72 days atop the Andes Cordillersa at 13,000 feet is still as haunting as it was first told in 1972. This book brings the events of the tragic plane crash and the issue of cannibalism as the only means of survival much more to light than the Hollywood movie version. A must read on the strength of the human spirit when faced with impossible odds.
