From the Publisher

Langston Cane V is 38, divorced and working as a government speechwriter, until he’s fired for sabotaging the minister’s speech. It seems the perfect time for Langston, the eldest son of a white mother and prominent black father, to embark on a quest to discover his family’s past—and his own sense of self.

Any Known Blood follows five generations of an African-Canadian-American family in a compelling story that slips effortlessly from the slave trade of 19th-century Virginia to the modern, predominantly white suburbs of Oakville, Ontario—once a final stop on the Underground Railroad. Elegant and sensuous, wry and witty, it is an engrossing tale about one man’s attempt to find himself through unearthing and giving voice to those who came before him.

About the Author

Lawrence Hill is the author of the novels Any Known Blood and Some Great Thing, and the non-fiction work Black Berry, Sweet Juice: On Being Black and White in Canada. He also co-authored, with Joshua Key, The Deserter's Tale: The Story of an Ordinary Soldier Who Walked Away from the War in Iraq. He lives in Burlington, Ontario.

Not as good as The Book of Negroes 3

Although this book kept my attention, it seemed to drag in a lot of places. And after reading it, I think I will take a rest from stories of slaves for a while. It could have been a true story and was well written; could have been any man, and it is amazing how Lawrence Hill can speak in the voice of a slave, though he is generations away from being one, thank goodness. Still, it was not as exciting and page-turning as his first, but still good. My mistake, I think was I became enamoured… read more
