This book will make your mouth water and your heart sing for the farmers who are doing the hard work of feeding us.

The author travels across Canada, visiting farmers, or as she calls them, chefs of the soil and the sea, people who are putting the taste and quality back into the foods we eat.

But the author doesn't just show up to watch and take notes. She gets her hands dirty, joining organic cowboys rounding up cows in the foothills of Alberta, sailing to sea with a scallop farmer, digging Yukon Gold potatoes in the Yukon (and spending nights lying awake in a Prospector's Tent listening to coyotes howl).

She compares careful sustainable farming with the industrial system that has so diminished the quality of our foods.

The stories about farmers are highly readable, packed with information yet also witty, hilarious and often gut-wrenching. A book about farming, I thought? What could be more boring than farming? But I learned so much and I couldn't put this book down.
