The Art of Racing in the Rain

by Garth Stein

May 5, 2008 | Hardcover

Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul (and an obsession with opposable thumbs), he has educated himself by watching television and by listening closely to the words of his master, Denny Swift, an up-and-coming racecar driver. Through Denny, Enzo has gained insight into the human condition, and he sees that life, like racing, isn’t just about going fast. Using the techniques of the race track, dogs—and human beings—can learn to navigate life’s hairpin turns.
On the night before his death, Enzo takes stock of his life, recalling all that he and his family have been through: the sacrifices Denny has made to succeed professionally; the unexpected loss of Eve, Denny’s wife; the three-year battle for custody of their daughter, Zoë. In the end, despite what he sees as his own limitations, Enzo comes through heroically to preserve the Swift family, holding in his heart the dream that Denny will become a racing champion with Zoë at his side. Having learned what it takes to be a compassionate and successful person, the wise canine can barely wait until his next lifetime, when he is sure he will return as a man.
A poignant love story and a moving tale of redemption, The Art of Racing in the Rain—for which rights have been sold around the world—is an unconventional, captivating look at the wonders and absurdities of human life . . . as only a dog could see them.

It’s frustrating for me to be unable to speak. To feel that I have so much to say, so many ways I can help, but I’m locked in a sound-proof box, a game show isolation booth from which I can see out and I can hear what’s going on, but they never turn on my microphone and they never let me out. It might drive a person mad. . . .
Myself, I have found ways around the madness. I work at my human gait, for instance. I practice chewing my food slowly like people do. I study the television for clues on behaviour and learn how to react in certain situations. In my next life, when I am born again as a person, I will practically be an adult the moment I am plucked from the womb, with all the preparation I have done.

    A dogs point of view

On Enzo's last night of being trapped in a dog's body, he looks back on his life and all the things he's experienced. He remembers the day Denny bought him, when Eve entered his life, when Zoe was born. He watched Eve's illness slowly take away her life, and then Denny's struggle to keep his daughter and his sanity. Enzo offers his advice on everything, but he's unable to speak it because being a dog, his tongue is too flat. He knows that in his next life, he will be born a human, he saw it on a documentary.
An awesome novel narrated by a dog, who is very opinionated. It might make you wonder if our pets really think the way Enzo does. Garth's novel is both hilarious, yet sad. I'd recommend it to everyone.

This is an absolute gem of a book for dog lovers and for those who are not proud owners. I ordered three more copies to give as gifts and everyone LOVED it. I'd never heard of Garth Stein but love the cut of his jib and am interested in his other books!

I loved this book! I ordered two more copies to give to friends (who are either racing or dog fans). This book made me cry. Beautifully written. Will look for more books from Mr. Stein in the future.

I loved everything about this book. I enjoyed it much better than "Marley & Me". This really was the best book I've read in a while. I recommend it to anyone who loves a heartwarming tale, and a good cry.

I love dogs, so this book, narrated by a dog, really appealed to me. The story had a something for everyone (cars, car racing, love, humor, lust) and kept me interested, and I really loved the way it was told through the dog's eyes. An interesting story.

I cannot recommend this book enough! It made me laugh out loud and sob like a baby. After I finished, which only took hours since I could not put it down, I immediately wanted to read it again. A truly unique, heartwarming book. I can't imagine anyone being disappointed after reading it.

Most Depressing Book I've Ever Read

I really wanted to love this book about Enzo the dog and Denny his owner - a sort of/sometimes race car driver. But it made me so sad. I just wanted to lie in the parking lot and get over by a truck. Denny's life was just so sad. So many bad things happened. And while I did enjoy reading a book written from the point of view of a dog I found that very sad too. So many things suck about being a dog - being a prisoner in an apartment, being forgotten, being hungry. I just found this book so depressing. I love books that give me a good cry but this one just made me sad.

The story of Enzo, is the most incredible story i have ever read. From start to finish i could not put this book down. Enzo tells the story great, and at times you may find your self crying... and even laughing. If you like books that are very deep, and heartwarming... then this is the book for you!

I'm not sure what I was expecting of a tale told from a dog's point of view, but I certainly wasn't expecting something this wonderful, moving, tender, or bittersweet.

This is the story of Enzo, a dog owned by Denny Swift during the pivotal years of Denny's life. Denny is a gifted car racer with a wife and child, and Enzo is a dog educated by television and his powerful intuitions on the world around him. Enzo relates to the world in deft metaphors about car racing, scents, and using his limited expressive abilities (if he only had a tongue that worked to make words!), and he tells the tale of Denny's life, and Enzo's own, in a beautiful, loving way that will grab you along for the ride.

The only criticism I can say has nothing to do with the writing, but with the publisher's choice of cover - very early on, Enzo describes himself, and the dog on the cover is not that "brown-black" dog with "wiry fur." Could it have been that hard to find a cover that was representative? It seems like such a small thing...

Enzo longs for an opposable thumb, an expressive voice, and a little bit of dignity, and to help. The story, which left me absolutely choked up, is told well, and I couldn't stop reading from start to finish in two days, at every available quiet moment.

    Heartbreaking

    Tara Blackmore

Readers looking for a light and silly read should steer clear of this one.

However, readers who are looking for a powerful and heartwrenching read, pick up this book NOW.

Set in the point of view of Enzo, the well-loved family dog, it begins with his puppyhood and ends with his death. Throughout his life, hand in hand with his family, Enzo, a surprisingly intelligent and insightful Lab-mix, undergoes tragedy and loss. But Denny, his owner, a race-car driver, teaches him through the subtle nuances of his craft, not to buckle down and give up under all that is piled on top of you.

I am no fan of racing, so much of what Enzo describes, especially when he refers to specific racers, is lost on me. It's the actually metaphors, the aforementioned nuances, that mean the most. Enzo describes and views life as a racetrack, slick and tricky with the wet of rain, and only the constant concentration and subtle care with the steering wheel will get you to the end.

While simple to read, the novel drags you in and doesn't let you go, until the very sweet and very touching ending.
