Artemis Fowl

by Eoin Colfer
As told by: Eoin Colfer

Disney Book Group | April 1, 2003 | Trade Paperback

Eoin Colfer describes his new book, Artemis Fowl, as " DieHard with fairies. " He`s not far wrong. Twelve-year-old Artemis Fowl is the most ingenious criminal mastermind inhistory. With two trusty sidekicks in tow, he hatches a cunning plot to divestthe fairyfolk of their pot of gold. Of course, he isn`t foolish enough tobelieve in all that " gold at the end of the rainbow" nonsense. Rather, he knowsthat the only way to separate the little people from their stash is to kidnapone of them and wait for the ransom to arrive. But when the time comes to puthis plan into action, he doesn`t count on the appearance of the extrasmall,pointy-eared Captain Holly Short of the LEPrecon (Lower Elements PoliceReconnaisance) Unit--and her senior officer, Commander Root, a man (sorry, elf) who will stop at nothing to get her back. Fantastic stuff from beginning to end, Artemis Fowl is a rip-roaring,21st-century romp of the highest order. The author has let his imagination runriot by combining folklore, fantasy, and a fistful of high-tech funk in anoutrageously devilish book that could well do for fairies what Harry Potter hasdone for wizardry. But be warned: this is no gentle frolic, so don`t be fooledby the fairy subject matter. Instead, what we have here is well-written,sophisticated, rough `n` tumble storytelling with enough high-octane attitude tomake it a seriously cool read for anyone over the age of 10. --SusanHarrison

    Fun read!

Artemis Fowl was a fun, short read. I enjoyed reading it and it was a bit different from the other books about fae I have read lately. The fae in this series are living underground, near the Earth's core, because they can't really coexist with humans. Unlike other fae, these ones have very advanced technology. Most fae are nature lovers and can't touch iron, so this kind of goes against that. So a bit of a different twist, but a good one.

Artemis is a 12 year old genuis, who is looking for a way to steal some faery gold. So he kidnaps one, which happens to be Holly Short, and randsoms her. I can really tell if as time goes on he feels sorry for Holly or not, but for a 12 year old kid, Artemis is pretty evil.

Even though I enjoyed the story, I feel it didn't hold me. As in, I could just put it down regardless of where I was in the book. I had fun reading, but there wasn't the need to continue reading while wandering around my house. Regardless, I'm still going to read the second book in the series and see how I make out with that one. Hopefully I will get sucked into it more.

Overall, this is a fun and quick read. It is well written and different from the normal story about fae. I would recommend it, since it is good, just didn't have me in suspense the whole time.

Artemis Fowl: The criminal mastermind is always 2 steps ahead of you, no matter what you do. He is smart, brave, intelligent, arrogant, and cooler than I’ll ever be. Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer is the best book, I’ve ever read. I don’t know how Eoin Colfer thought of it, but he has made a wonderful book. This book is extremely good because its an action-packed book that I couldn’t stop reading. The book started with action and the action never stopped. Artemis is a genius millionaire that can make war with anyone in less than 5 minutes. It was suspenseful because you couldn’t put the book down, EVER. The fast pace of the book kept me awake and reading all night. I read it in 3 days. It was funny and exciting because of the great descriptions Eoin Colfer gave. You may think that fairies are not real, but Eoin Colfer makes the fairies seem real and believable. This is not a traditional fairy tale since it involves real people, science and technology. I highly recommend this book to everyone because it was action-packed and it was that good. Read it and see if you agree.

Artemis Fowl is a great book. It has lots of suspense. I could not put it down. I was one of the best books I ever read (along with Harry Potter). It would be a great gift. In short, I loved this book.
