Astonishing Splashes Of Colour

by Clare Morrall

McClelland & Stewart | September 4, 2007 | Trade Paperback

"When is the right time to tell someone they're not who they think they are?" Caught in an over-vivid world as a result of synaesthesia (a condition in which emotions are seen as colours), Kitty Wellington is tipped off-centre by the loss of a child. And as children all around become emblems of hope and longing and grief, she's made shockingly aware of the real reasons for her pervasive sense of her own "non-existence."

What mystery at the heart of Kitty's family makes her four older brothers so vague about her mother's life? And why does her artist father splash paint on canvas rather than answer his daughter's questions? On the edges of her dreams, Kitty glimpses the kaleidoscope hippie van that took her sister Dinah away and wonders how this event may link to the dim corridors of her own childhood, a childhood in which she had no tangible sense of her mother.

This compelling novel is threaded through with a dark humour and resonates with universal truths as it tells of identity struggles in a large family, the sadness of lost children, the approach of breakdown and desperation - and the optimism of an eccentric, loving marriage. Skilful, unsentimental, fresh, and original, Astonishing Splashes of Colour is a sparkling debut by a writer of exceptional talent.

Bought this book for $5.99 at the local Chapters. Figured, what the hell? I feel I should go back and pay full price. This is truly an astounding novel. The narrator, her father, husband, and brothers are so vividly imagined. I became very involved in Kitty's life as I read this book. The narrative threatens to fall apart in the last fifty-or-so pages, but it is still a fantastic book.

I picked up this book from the library a while back and can say how I could relate on some levels with this character lost in her own world, living a life strange and difficult to many I assume. You will see in her other novels she doesn't follow the same kind of fiction a kind of writer I relish I seldom read any books unless it is a continuation but a short one. Not for those expecting Potter like situation but those who like to explore different styles of one writer.

This book has some really great moments, and for the most part I love the way the author writes. Not really life changing - but this book is definately worth a read. The only thing that bothered me was how it ended, but other than that, the main characters are weird and great and it tells a sweet story. Good read overall.
