and her young, irresponsible mother seem trapped in their miserable, poverty-stricken life. Theo dreams of belonging to a "real"family with two parents and brothers and sisters, and her dream seems to come true when she is mysteriously adopted by a large, warm family, the Kaldors.

For the first time in her life, Theo has brand new clothes and things of her own, security and good friends. But as time passes, the magic of Theo''s new life begins - literally - to fade, and soon she finds herself back with her mother. Were the Kaldors real, or just a dream? And who is the shadowy figure who haunts Theo''s thoughts?

Before Twilight was even published, my all time favourite book was Awake and Dreaming. This is a touching story about having the hard life: a poor little girl, Theo, with a single parent who has to pan for money. But when a sudden wish gives Theo a new family, you'd think there would be no way things could go bad again. But then it does, and all of Theo's new family, new clothes, new friends, disappears, and she's back with her poor mother, Rae. But there's something new, a ghostly figure that Theo meets in the graveyard.
I really LOVED this book when I was little, and I still think of this story once in awhile. I would recommend this book to everyone learning to grow up.

I loved this book so much I read it over and over as a child. There are some great surprises in the story, and the life of the children was so heartbreaking that I couldn't bear to put it down.
Highly recommend if you want a beautiful story, filled with laughter and tears.

From Our Editors

Little Theo doesn't have very much in the way of extras; in fact, she doesn't have much in the way of bare necessities. Her mother is too young, too selfish and too irresponsible to raise a small child, so Theo creates her own world where she escapes. This book world becomes so vivid that one day she wakes up with the Kaldor family, with parents who love her and look after her. When the dream fades, Theo goes looking for the real Kaldors and finds that they don't know her at all. It's the author's ghost that helps this little girl through her confusion in Kit Pearson's Awake and Dreaming. Through her insights into this other family, Theo slowly starts to recognize the values of her own family.
