From the Publisher

The "baby bible" of the post-Dr. Spock generation, already embraced by hundreds of thousands of American parents, has now been revised, expanded, and brought thoroughly up-to-date -- with the latest information on everything from diapering to day care, from midwifery to hospital birthing rooms, from postpartum nutrition to infant development. Dr. Bill and Martha Sears draw from their vast experience both as medical professionals and as the parents of eight children to provide comprehensive information on virtually every aspect of infant care. Working for the first time with their sons Dr. Bob and Dr. Jim, both pediatric specialists in their own right, the Searses have produced a completely updated guide that is unrivaled in its scope and authority. The Baby Book focuses on the essential needs of babies -- cating, sleeping, development, health, and comfort -- as it addresses the questions of greatest concern to today''s parents. The Baby Book presents a practical, contemporary approach to parenting that reflects the way we live today. The Searses acknowledge that there is no one way to parent a baby, and they offer the basic guidance and inspiration you need to develop the parenting style that best suits you and your child. The Baby Book is a rich and invaluable resource that will help you get the most out of parenting -- for your child, for yourself, and for your entire family.

    The Baby Book 5

Fantastic, compassionate parenting and baby manual that works! Dr.Sears recommends gentle, benevolent child rearing techniques that are in the best interest of the baby. Parents should open their minds to his approach and understand the importance of attachment parenting, as opposed to establishing rigid routines that benefit the parent rather than child. Excellent, informative read!

    Good advice? Sometimes. 1

We got this book for our first kid, and it's true that there's a ton of good advice in it - but the Sears' perspective is that parents are infant-support systems first and people second. Get the book, but be prepared to feel guilty every time you put your child down, every time you feel exasperated, every time you want to put yourself before your helpless, squalling, annoying, dirty, needy, uncomfortable bundle of joy.

    • Agreed. They shouldn't call it attachment parenting, they should call it martyr parenting and anyone who doesn't live up to their 'ideal' is a bad parent ... read more

    • I'm not sure Dr. Sears intends it to be as both "alligator" and you perceive it, with regard to the parents' feeling guilt. I believe that he's accurate ... read more

    GREAT CHOICE!!! 5

I really enjoyed this book and I recommend it for any first time moms out there. Dr. Sears ultimately created "Attachment Parenting," and as you read this book, you realize that it's others out there who has made this style of parenting almost unbearable. Dr. Sears explains it as a normal way of loving and responding to a child's needs - nothing unbearable or overwhelming about it. This book is so logical - I just thought it was great!!

I recommend purchasing this book even before your little one is born! Read thru it then. You will continue referring to it until he/she is a toddler! It has everything you need to know - from breastfeeding, illness, milestones, etc. There is a great index and list of resources that makes looking up information quick and easy.

If I could give any new parent one piece of advice (and I do) it would be buy this book and ONLY this book . Dr. Sears' wisdom, insightful information and comments are better than anything I've read - and I've read 'em all! He empowers new parents and gives good and realistic advice - without ever preaching. Please just buy this book. You won't be sorry. read more
