From the Publisher

If any comic has a claim to have truly reinvigorated the genre, then The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller--known also for his excellent Sin City series and his superb rendering of the blind superhero Daredevil--is probably the top contender. Batman represented all that was wrong in comics and Miller set himself a tough task taking on the camp crusader and turning this laughable, innocuous children''s cartoon character into a hero for our times. The great Alan Moore (V for Vendetta, Swamp Thing, the arguably peerless Watchmen) argued that only someone of Miller''s stature could have done this. Batman is a character known well beyond the confines of the comic world (as are his retinue) and so reinventing him, while keeping his limiting core essentials intact, was a huge task.Miller went far beyond the call of duty. The Dark Knight is a success on every level. Firstly it does keep the core elements of the Batman myth intact, with Robin, Alfred the butler, Commissioner Gordon, and the old roster of villains, present yet brilliantly subverted. Secondly the artwork is fantastic--detailed, sometimes claustrophobic, psychotic. Lastly it''s a great story: Gotham City is a hell on earth, street gangs roam but there are no heroes. Decay is ubiquitous. Where is a hero to save Gotham? It is 10 years since the last recorded sighting of the Batman. And things have got worse than ever. Bruce Wayne is close to being a broken man but something is keeping him sane: the need to see change and the belief that he can orchestrate some of that change. Batman is back. The Dark Knight has returned. Awesome. --Mark Thwaite

After ten years of retirement, an older and darker) Batman returns to Gotham City to fight new villains and old. This amazing book features a good story and plot, and features amazing art work. This is also the same book that inspired the first (and best) Batman film of 1989. Batman Returns with an amazing book!

    Pretty good! 4

This was a pretty cool graphic novel. Its about Bruce Wayne (who at this time is in his 50's) battling with his batman side from not letting the batman free again. You get to see some of batmans friends , colleages(JLA) and new characters. I recommend this GN to an Batman fans or someone who likes Frank Millers work. P.S this graphic novel is really good but its sequel "The Dark Knight Strikes Again" is not that great. So I would'nt go on and buy it.

From many perspectives, this is an excellent graphic novel. 1. Comic Book: it follows the traditional format of what comics should be about: straight-forward storytelling. It makes use of the rules and bends them quite freely to create a new style of design. 2. Subject matter: while many people relish the fact that this introduced the grim and gritty stories of the eighties, it is more important to note that it tells a future tale of what happens when the masked vigilante walks away, and… read more

A stroke of pure genius... Frank Miller's dark, bold tale of the Dark Knight's ressurection breaks all the rules. This is THE book that turned the comic book industry upside down and probably saved it from laughable mediocratiy. A must read!

    A Knock Out!! 5

Any comic book fan will tell you this is a must have book. This book has been hyped since it's release, and gladly it meets the hype and then some. Miller takes Batman and reminds fans why the Dark Knight is both a knight and dark. Set in a future that is cold, controlled, chaotic, and unjust, we find a Bruce Wayne old, forgotten, and disillusioned. What this new world needs, what Wayne needs, is a beast, THE beast to make things right. Let the fun begin! Pick it up!

    Batman's greatest story ever 5

Frank Miller's dark, post-apocalyptic vision of a future Gotham City gone to hell is the quisessential portrayl of The Batman. Here is the character the way Bob Kane envisioned him: brutal, mysterious, tragic, brave and swift, and perhaps a little bit psychotic. This story harkens back to the early days of the Bat lore, when Batman took what ever means necessary to defending justice, even if that meant killing criminals without remorse. In this groundbreaking series (and I do not use that term… read more

Frank Miller is a Genius! 5

This review is from: Batman: The Dark Knight Returns (Trade Paperback)

The Dark Knight is as he was meant to be; dark, gritty, and will do anything to win. I love the fear Miller has created a darker Gotham, and Batman rises to the occasion. As much as I adore this work, I caution you, this isn't for the fans of the cartoon Batman. This Batman goes places you may not want to see, but Miller creates such a believable, terrifing world, you almost want to be there to watch Batman clean it up.

When this groundbreaking story was published over twenty years ago, it sent shockwaves through the comic book world and also through serious literary circles. Frank Miller single handedly reimagined and redefined an iconic literary figure that is as familiar to everyone as Tarzan or Quasimodo, adding new depth and vitality to the legend. The Dark Knight Returns introduces the reader to a geriatric Bruce Wayne in his sixties who has kept his vigilante alter ego out of public sight for over ten… read more

The Dark Knight Returns, With a Vengeance 5

This was Frank Miller's first dive into the world of Gotham City. This story is the first half of what eventually ends up being Batman's final adventures in Gotham. For ten years, Batman has been unseen, his existence is merely a myth. The city is going through a major heatwave and an increase in gang crimes. The streets are not safe. Comm. James Gordon who retires in a few days cannot seem to find the leader of this new gang who is making the streets of Gotham unsafe. All the while there is… read more

This review is from: Batman: The Dark Knight Returns (Trade Paperback)

Frank Miller yet again proves his amazing writing abilities as well as his unbeleiveable artistic abilities with the dark knight returns. The mood of this graphic novel is a very dark adaptation of the batman. In this graphic novel, Batman comes out of retirement to bring peace back to gotham city and to help put a stop to the tyranny of the new threats that the city now faces. I give "Batman, the Dark Knight Returns" a 5 out of 5, for he has retold the story of Batman in the way it should've… read more
