Beautiful Creatures

by Kami Garcia, Margaret Stohl

Little, Brown Books for Young Readers | December 1, 2009 | Hardcover

There were no surprises in Gatlin County . We were pretty much the epicenter of the middle of nowhere. At least, that''s what I thought. Turns out, I couldn''t have been more wrong. There was a curse. There was a girl. And in the end, there was a grave. Lena Duchannes is unlike anyone the small Southern town of Gatlin has ever seen, and she''s struggling to conceal her power and a curse that has haunted her family for generations. But even within the overgrown gardens, murky swamps and crumbling graveyards of the forgotten South, a secret cannot stay hidden forever. Ethan Wate, who has been counting the months until he can escape from Gatlin, is haunted by dreams of a beautiful girl he has never met. When Lena moves into the town''s oldest and most infamous plantation, Ethan is inexplicably drawn to her and determined to uncover the connection between them. In a town with no surprises, one secret could change everything.

What can I say but I LOVED IT. Here is a good story of love and magic. The characters are well developed and real. The writing and storyline, wonderful...kept me up at all hours. The ending, WOW.
I am not one to read alot of YA, but I'm so glad I chose to read this one. I most certainly will be picking up Beautiful Darkness and Beautiful Chaos. Highly recommended

This book stars Ethan Carter Wate... A normal boy who minds his own buisness and does what he wants.

Then he starts having dreams about this girl who he dosen't know... But yet feels attracted and thinks there is suppose to be some sort of relation...

When the girl comes to life... Things go wrong.

Ethan is enwraped into Lena's life ( the girl in his dreams )

    THOUGHTS:

Since Lena was a huge part of the book... She could've been better. She was annoying. VERY annoying.
The plot was amazing and Ethan was awesome!

It was just Lena who put the book down....

The book started out a bit slow, but by the end I couldn't put it down and found myself yelling at some points as if they can hear me. I'm off to read Beautiful Darkness!! hope is as good as this one. ENJOY :D

I didn't have much time to read but when I did read, I couldn't put the book down. It draws you in and you want to find out what happend next. Some things were predictable though. It dragged on! VERY REPETITIVE!!! It ended off as a cliff hanger so I have to read the second book now. Other than that, the characters were pretty cool as well :)

You can not argue with a interesting story. Unfortunately event the best story can be killed by too much useless information. Altogether I enjoyed reading Beautiful Creatures but in my opinion there was too much about feelings and emotions from main character. That of course doesn't mean its a bad thing, it just slows the action a lot and makes Ethan looks like a little boy who is whining all the time (Oh, Amma will kill me in the morning for that. Oh, Lena please talk to me...). It would not be a problem if the emotions would be fresh, but once the authors established Ethan's feelings for his friends and family, they do not change. You see the same phrases every few pages. I guess if you enjoy that, you will find it quite a good read.

It's always disappointing when you pick up a book and expect it to be great, and then basically get slapped in the face by the thing. I honestly didn't expect this one to be such a let down considering it was a "Heather's Pick". What made "Beautiful Creatures" such a bore was the fact that everything was soo dragged out. I kept thinking to myself "Okay, we get it. Move the h*ll on". This book took a lot of energy to read, and by the end it just wasn't worth it. I'm just one of those people who believe in giving a book a chance, so I always read them through. The setting was neat and I really liked that it was from a guy's POV for a change, but that definitely wasn't enough to make up for the lack of plot.

Anyway, I definitely won't be reading the sequel...that's for sure.

(Side note: It's kind of sad that two authors collaborated together and this it what they came up with. Just saying.)

i thought the book would be great, looking at the story and the characters and their powers! but i have to say the beginning and the end were good, but the middle was horribly slow and boring. it was like all the main characters were doing was being sad about losing each other. it was horrible. but the beginning and the end were great.

I really liked this book, to call it great could be acceptable but some parts were predictable but it didn't bother me as much as it could have. Loved the characters and the dark aura can't wait to find out what will happen next between these two.

This book had me hooked from the very beginning! The mystery that needed to be uncovered, the unknown. The characters were deep and relatable. And the story was "beautiful." You will not be disappointed with this amazing tale of discovery, fear, and most importantly love.

Best New Writer Nominee Beautiful Creatures

Nominated for best New Writer (s) for our Teen Read Awards, Beautiful Creatures stands out in its excellence. Two authour voices mesh wonderfully into one storytelling journey. Both Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl write a great tale about Lena Duchannes--a soon to be witch--and Ethan Wate--the guy who'll fall madly in love with Lena, but pays a lethal pricce.
Think star-crossed lovers meets the supernatural.
Beautiful Creatures emersed me into the great gothic scenery of Southern Gatlin, through old and eerie passages, into magic enriched houses and a love story that stretches across time.

    Disappointing :(

I started out really enjoying this book, but that enjoyment quickly ended. I found this book to be waaaaay to long and filled with waaaay to much irrelevant information. I'm sure the writers did that to try and get the reader to have a real sense of life in the South, but I found it tiresome and towards the end of the book I was skipping parts that I didn't find important to the story as a whole. Also, it took way to long for the important parts of the book to happen. I think that the writers could've cut out some of the useless information and that would have helped to speed the book up. The book felt like it was dragging and seemed to go on forever. I kept waiting for some action to happen and instead I got trips to the library or unnecessary cat fights at school. I think the book would've been better if it wouldn't have been so long.
Although I am saying that I didn't like this book(which I didn't) there was a few things I liked about it. I liked how the narrator was the boy, not the girl. I thought that was a fresh idea. So often these books are narratored by a girl, so it was nice to get a new perspective. Also I thought the concept was good, (casters) I enjoyed finding out about each family members power, I just wish the story would've been told better :(

Wow. This novel was ah-may-zing. I was kind of intimidated by it at first, both because it is a very large book, and because I had heard such great things about it, but I had absolutely nothing to worry about. It was fantastic. The characters are original and grow throughout the novel. Also, I really liked the setting and tone of the novel, it was so Southern Gothic, very original. Read this book, you definitely won't regret it.

    Loved the story line

This is a fantastic book to read for all ages. It's written from a boy's persective (Ethan) though it's obvious that Lena is the main character. This book is about her; about her sixteen moons. The characters of Gatlin are unique. The description of the townspeople, of the mansion, of the greenbrier, of the loved ones sucha as Amma and Boo and Macon Ravenwood and even the dad are all unique.

I can understand why some people gave it low ratings because of the history of Gatlin and the link between the past and the present and the whole casters powers. It goes in detail with that and it can be tiresome at times but the history behind it makes sense to enhance the storyline and create a stronger view for the characters. Without it, it won't be what it is. If you want to read this book, enter the world with an open mind towards facing a bit of history and a bit of depth in characters of the people and the town.

For a book that was marked by being Heather's picks I thought maybe it would be really great, and I was pretty disapointed. The story line was predictable and boring. Makes me wonder why it was on Heather's pick list, do they read the books before they put them on there?
