A Beautiful Mind: The Life of Mathematical Genius and Nobel Laureate John Nash

by Sylvia Nasar

Simon & Schuster | December 4, 2001 | Trade Paperback

How could you, a mathematician, believe that extraterrestrials were sending you messages?" the visitor from Harvard asked the West Virginian with the movie-star looks and Olympian manner.

"Because the ideas I had about supernatural beings came to me the same way my mathematical ideas did," came the answer. "So I took them seriously."

Thus begins the true story of John Nash, the mathematical genius who was a legend by age thirty when he slipped into madness, and who -- thanks to the selflessness of a beautiful woman and the loyalty of the mathematics community -- emerged after decades of ghostlike existence to win a Nobel Prize and world acclaim. The inspiration for a major motion picture, Sylvia Nasar''s award-winning biography is a drama about the mystery of the human mind, triumph over incredible adversity, and the healing power of love.

    Hard to Get Through

This was a hard book to plough through. It is over rich in detail, which tends to bog down the story. While I realise this isn't a novel, the story of this man's life, genius, troubles, and triumphs are extraordinary, and are buried under trivial and dull minutia. I'll admit that I couldn't finish this book because it was too tedious trying to get to the interesting bits while wading through an insipid history lesson. I'm afraid the book tried TOO hard to do justice to an otherwise fascinating life and man.

This is just the most interesting book I have ever read. This gives me encouragement to become something in life and be like Nash. I wish it were published long time ago. Again its a great book and do read it.

    A Beautiful Review

    John De Marchi

The author has done a great job in writing a book about a professor who becomes mentally ill after all of his accomplishments.

John Forbes is a brilliant man who is a mathematician who could solve almost any math problem on paper. He is probably one of the greatest mathematicians of our modern times. He sadly becomes mentally ill after the age of thirty and becomes disillusioned. He was recognized for his game theory later on in his life time and ends up winning the nobel peace prize.

    This book is very inspirational.

The book is a biography of John Forbes Nash (b. 1928) - not to be confused with John Forbes.
