Before I Go To Sleep

by S Watson

HarperCollins Publishers Ltd | June 6, 2011 | Trade Paperback

Christine wakes up every morning in an unfamiliar bed with an unfamiliar man.

She looks in the mirror and sees an unfamiliar, middle-aged face. And every morning, the man she has woken up with must explain that he is Ben, he is her husband, she is forty-seven years old, and a terrible accident two decades earlier decimated her ability to form new memories.

But it?s the phone call from a Dr. Nash, a neurologist who claims to be working with Christine without her husband?s knowledge, that directs her to her journal, hidden in the back of her closet. For the past few weeks, Christine has been recording her daily activities -- tearful mornings with Ben, sessions with Dr. Nash, flashes of scenes from her former life -- and rereading past entries, relearning the facts of her life as retold by the husband she is completely dependent upon. As the entries build up, Christine asks many questions. What was life like before the accident? Why did she and Ben never have a child? What has happened to Christine?s best friend? And what exactly was the horrific accident that caused such a profound loss of memory?

Every day, Christine must begin again the reconstruction of her past. And the closer she gets to the truth, the more unbelievable it seems.

I wasn't sure what to expect with this book, as the reviews seemed to contain rants and raves and everything in between. My review is one of the in between ones. The story is very slow to start, and almost annoying as Christine repeats the same details every morning when she wakes up. I understand what the author was attempting, but it was a little too redundant. Very close to the end of the book, I found it did turn into a page turner, but it was too little, too late. I don't see myself reading this again, as I don't think I could make it through the first 3/4 again.

Traumatic acquired BRAIN INJURY is the invisible disease .. it is so NOT understood by most people .. UNTIL you or someone u know unfortunately suffers an injury with this confusing unhealable problem. I AM SUCH A PERSON .. i have SEVERE ACQUIRED BRAIN INJURY .. i have not read this book YET .. I now plan too .. Every individual's brain injury is unique tho there r commonalities .. i THANK GOD only have a 3 month anmesia .. one month before the car accident .. 1.5 months complete amnesia followed by a month i have flashes of memory .. I am writing this only to say i feel SORRY for you and hope u never ever have anyone u love undergo this tragic fate .. as u will be in the stat of 75% who will LEAVE that person is in traumatic NEED !!!

You know nothing about me and the relationships I have, so that's a harsh accusation. I was commenting on the writing style and the book as a work of fiction.

    Lynnie

i never intended to comment on YOU & ur life relationships .. i understand u were commenting on the book .. but ppl reading reviews may NOT understand or know that the writer is illustrating what the LIFE of someone who has Severe Acquired Brain Injury could possiby be like .. YES it is only one extreme possibility .. but MANY ppl w Brain Injury exhibit some common attributes. Upon reading ur comment initially i must admit that i myself was offended .. as i have worked so HARD over the past decade to REPAIR / REGAIN !! as much of my LIFE pre-accident .. i had a very HIGH FUNCTIONING productive LIFE .. :'(( .. ive made HUGE progress but will never be the same. Again .. i commented for that reason .. NOT to offend you .. but to INFORM ..

I couldn't put this book down. While it does get off to a slow start, it just keeps getting better and better as you go along. S.J. Watson did a fabulous job of putting us in Christine's head. We feel her confusion and her fears.

I eagerly anticipate a second novel from this author.

Fast read, but was slightly repetitive, which I understand is part of the telling of the story. Sorry, didn't see where all the excitement was.

Very disappointed in this book...best part of the book was the last chapter. Very slow moving, repetitive writing and not enough of intrigue to carry you through the book. If you buy it, buy it on sale....

I should preface that I do not, as a rule, read this genre of book because I never find them to be either thrilling or suspenseful. However, having read the reviews here on Indigo, I thought I would give this one a try.
For the most part, I found the main character, Christine (who is suffering from amnesia and starts each day wondering who and where she is), to be unsympathetic and annoying to the point that I could have cared less what the climactic event was that lends itself to her ongoing dilemma. I also found that the cast of characters who assist Christine each day to piece her life together were underdeveloped and/or unbelievable in their elaborate scheme of lies or sins of omission to keep the main character confused to the very end of this meandering mess.
Before I go to sleep tonight, I will post this book for resale under the heading of Like New and hope that when I wake tomorrow that I will have forgotten I ever read it.

This book was honestly the best start to my new year! I've never felt so connected to the main character before as much as I was with Christine in the story. This book was one that I honestly couldn't stop reading! I'd honestly recommend this book to anyone at all! Especially those interested in a good suspense-filled story or who appreciate a psychological type of storyline as well.

What are we, if not an accumulation of our memories?

Memories are a bit of a problem for the protagonist of SJ Watson's debut novel Before I Go To Sleep. Twenty years ago, Christine was in a serious accident that left her without the ability to retain memories. That means every morning she wakes up in a room she doesn't recognize, with a husband she doesn't remember and in a body she's troubled to discover is twenty years older than it should be. She muddles through the day, trying to piece her fractured life back together - with the knowledge that she's going to have to do it all over again the next day. That's right: she goes to sleep and her brain erases all the memories of the day.

Before I Go To Sleep was my book club's first read for 2012 and was also my pick. We had a lively discussion about the book's merits and I am happy to say that with a few minor caveats, the women in my group (except for one) generally enjoyed the book.

The general concensus was that Watson did an admirable job of writing a convincing female - not an easy task, I don't think. We had a little bit of a debate about the novel's structure. At least one person was put off by constantly having to re-read the story, rediscovering memories as Christine did. I actually think that it was deftly handled. If I am feeling frustrated by having to hear stuff over and over, imagine how trapped by her circumstances Christine must be feeling.

I alo think Watson was striving to write something more than just a thriller - although he did that quite handily. I think he was trying to say something about memory and how our memories shape us. It's a fear of mine, really, to be old and not know my children or the other people who have been important to me. Christine's situation means that she is forced to learn painful information over and over again - and it's heartbreaking.

The book had me in its iron grip until the last 50 or so pages- when I have to say that it fell apart for me. It wasn't that I didn't buy a certain part of it (and, really, it's almost impossible to talk about without giving anything away), let me just say this: too much convenient exposition. Too neat.

That said, Before I Go To Sleep was a great way to kick off our 12th reading year.

This book is about a woman's emotional upheaval caused by her tremendous memory loss of many years of her life. It starts out as a personal memoir and ends as an emotionally and intellectually charged thriller. I could not stop reading it until the very end - every chapter added a new twist to the plot!

What an amazing book. From the first chapter, you are left hanging until the very end. Couldn't imagine what was around the next corner, and couldn't put it down until I could find out what was next. A great read.

I too thought this book wasn't going to be that great. The first chapter I was thinking it wasn't that great but then it got started and I was hooked! I just had to keep reading chapter after chapter. Loved it and can't wait to see what the movie is like.

Wow! What a fantastic book! My library has a little table where they keep the bestsellers - books that are high on the charts, thus only available for a week-long loan. No holds, no renewals. Normally, when I take a book out, I'll put a hold on it online and pick it up at the library. However, I was wandering aimlessly, killing time before my book club meeting (2 hours to be exact - I have no concept of planning) and I saw these shelves. Before I Go To Sleep, by S. J. Watson, was on my Wishlist for the last few weeks, so I decided to take it out. I was a little worried since I only had it for a week, so the night I took it out I started to read. After pausing to go to bed (even the most avid reader must give in to sleep), I couldn't put it down.

Before I Go To Sleep is the story of Christine. She wakes up and has no idea who she is, where she is, or who the man next to her is. Every day is like this-she goes to sleep and wakes up with no memory, only having to piece it together in the morning with the help of her husband. Though she's not sure if he's telling her everything.

I would classify this book as a psychological-mystery-thriller novel. It was kind of like The Bourne Identity, or Memento. We know something happened to Christine to affect her memory and the whole story is thrown in motion, giving us more pieces to the puzzle as to who Christine is and what happened. My mouth dropped so many times at all the twists and turns throughout the novel, which made for a great mystery. As you read it you're going to be coming up with stories of your own as to what happened-I know I did-and, if you're like me, you'll realize you didn't have a clue.

The funny thing about this book is the character development. Since Christine has amnesia, we don't know much about her character-it builds throughout the novel. As it's told from her perspective, all of the secondary characters aren't completely fleshed in the beginning. It was such a unique thing that we'd learn a little more about each character throughout the entire novel, rather than seeing their life sketched out in the beginning. The pacing is fantastic-a great balance between the suspense and emotional drama.

This book was intense. When I finished reading it I couldn't help but keep thinking about what was going on, what Christine was going through-I don't want to give away anything, so you're just going to have to read it. Don't worry about it being a short loaner-you won't be able to put it down. This was the debut novel of S. J. Watson-I can't wait to see what he releases in the future.

I cannot say a bad thing about this book! I LOVED it. For me this was the perfect combination of mystery and romance. With neither one be overdone. When I first read the description of the book, and even after buying it and reading it, All i could think was "A man wrote this???" It was unbelievable, that i could get such a clear picture of Christine. S.J. Watson did an excellent job!!!
