Wow! What a fantastic book! My library has a little table where
they keep the bestsellers - books that are high on the charts, thus
only available for a week-long loan. No holds, no renewals.
Normally, when I take a book out, I'll put a hold on it online and
pick it up at the library. However, I was wandering aimlessly,
killing time before my book club meeting (2 hours to be exact - I
have no concept of planning) and I saw these shelves. Before I Go
To Sleep, by S. J. Watson, was on my Wishlist for the last few
weeks, so I decided to take it out. I was a little worried since I
only had it for a week, so the night I took it out I started to
read. After pausing to go to bed (even the most avid reader must
give in to sleep), I couldn't put it down.
Before I Go To Sleep is the story of Christine. She wakes up and
has no idea who she is, where she is, or who the man next to her
is. Every day is like this-she goes to sleep and wakes up with no
memory, only having to piece it together in the morning with the
help of her husband. Though she's not sure if he's telling her
everything.
I would classify this book as a psychological-mystery-thriller
novel. It was kind of like The Bourne Identity, or Memento. We know
something happened to Christine to affect her memory and the whole
story is thrown in motion, giving us more pieces to the puzzle as
to who Christine is and what happened. My mouth dropped so many
times at all the twists and turns throughout the novel, which made
for a great mystery. As you read it you're going to be coming up
with stories of your own as to what happened-I know I did-and, if
you're like me, you'll realize you didn't have a clue.
The funny thing about this book is the character development. Since
Christine has amnesia, we don't know much about her character-it
builds throughout the novel. As it's told from her perspective, all
of the secondary characters aren't completely fleshed in the
beginning. It was such a unique thing that we'd learn a little more
about each character throughout the entire novel, rather than
seeing their life sketched out in the beginning. The pacing is
fantastic-a great balance between the suspense and emotional drama.
This book was intense. When I finished reading it I couldn't help
but keep thinking about what was going on, what Christine was going
through-I don't want to give away anything, so you're just going to
have to read it. Don't worry about it being a short loaner-you
won't be able to put it down. This was the debut novel of S. J.
Watson-I can't wait to see what he releases in the future.
