The Belgariad (Vol 1): Volume One: Pawn Of Prophecy, Queen Of Sorcery, Magician's Gambit

by David Eddings

August 27, 2002 | Trade Paperback

Millions of readers have discovered the magic of David Eddings' New York Times bestselling series The Belgariad. Now the first three books in this monumental epic appear in a single volume. Here, long-time fans can rediscover the wonder-and the uninitiated can embark upon a thrilling new journey of fantasy and adventure.

It all begins with the theft of the Orb that for so long protected the West from an evil god. As long as the Orb was at Riva, the prophecy went, its people would be safe from this corrupting power. Garion, a simple farm boy, is familiar with the legend of the Orb, but skeptical in matters of magic. Until, through a twist of fate, he learns not only that the story of the Orb is true, but that he must set out on a quest of unparalleled magic and danger to help recover it. For Garion is a child of destiny, and fate itself is leading him far from his home, sweeping him irrevocably toward a distant tower-and a cataclysmic confrontation with a master of the darkest magic.

I started off by reading Belgarath the Sorcerer and Polgara The Sorceress. Wondering why I didn't know who some characters were.. Then my friend told me about the Belgariad and the Mallorean. Picked them up and could not put them down. The fantasy world with all it's politics and adventures keeps you reading!!

Thought this book was just okay. I wanted more action. There was definately alot of characters but no one really stood out to me. I felt some of it was similar to Lord of The Rings but not nearly as good. I wanted the main character Garion to become interesting but I don't think he really did. Overall, it was just ok.

As a lover of fantasy and encouraged by all the praise Eddings receives, I was sorely disappointed when I read this book. I don't remember the last time I caught myself actually rolling my eyes while reading! The characters are about as deep as a puddle, their emotions, assumptions and intellect being so basic and uncomplicated as to not be believable. The storyline itself is so cookie-cutter fantasy as to be painfully predictable and quite uncompelling. I also noticed some inconsistency within the story, which seems laced with contradictions in Eddings' attempts at explaining the logic behind the workings of his magic or the drive behind his characters... The reason I finished this book is that despite everything, I found the characters to be quite likable and I was curious, for that reason, to ride along with them in their adventure. If it means spending time and money on the sequel to finish that ride however, I guess this is where I get off... I can see this being an enjoyable adventure for younger readers who have not yet been introduced to the world of fantasy, but if you're a fantasy lover who savours deeply human characters and richly developed plots, check out George RR Martin, Terry Goodkind, Guy Gavriel Kay's The Fionavar Tapestry or Marion Zimmer Bradley's The Mists of Avalon instead.

This is definetly one of the best fantasy series I've ever read. I like a lot of mystery, great characters, and adventurous places, and this series has it all. It's hard to find a new series to commit to, one that you'll stick with (hoping it will keep your interest), but this one does. I fully recommend it.
