by Brent Weeks

Orbit | December 1, 2008 | Mass Market Paperbound

Logan Gyre is king of Cenaria, a country under siege, with a threadbare army and little hope. He has one chance - a desperate gamble, but one that could destroy his kingdom.

In the north, the new Godking has a plan. If it comes to fruition, no one will have the power to stop him.

Kylar Stern has no choice. To save his friends-and perhaps his enemies-he must accomplish the impossible: assassinate a goddess.

Beyond the Shadows
is the action-packed conclusion to the Night Angel Trilogy.

    A Must Read!

The conclusion to the series does not disapoint one bit. With many twists and turns, the character development is astonishing. The author finds a way to bring them all together in the end, even after they had all followed their own seperate paths. I highly recommend this trilogy even if you don't usually read fantasy novels.

    Not the greatest

Can't say I was thrilled by the final installment of the Night Angel Trilogy. This first book was excellent. The second was good, but didn't maintain the atmosphere of the first. This, the third, might as well have been another series altogether. Characters that were in the first book minor at best, suddenly became central to the plot. There was many characters in the first books, but many of them were killed off and people plugged into their places with little explanation. The plot became significantly more complicated, incorporating myths, legends and histories that were unmentioned previously in the books. Now, that can be acceptable if it at least keeps with the pace and tone of the previous books. This one didn't.
I did enjoy the book, but it really should have been a stand-alone novel, or at least parts of it as a 4th book.

Beyond the Shadows is full of passion, realization, love, acceptance and unity. In this final installment, all of the characters we have come to admire work together to banish the ultimate evil. Each word from the characters' dialogues, and each action they carried out stir up emotions within the reader, which one would not expect. Determination and wit flow though the novel's pages, which further draws its readers into the story.
Beyond the Shadows illustrates the power of love and friendship, and the strength of the bonds which tie individuals together. By the end of this novel, the readers would have known the characters so well that each of those characters would linger in the readers' memories long after the book has been put down.
The Night Angel Trilogy is no doubt one of the best trilogies I have read and I highly recommend it to everyone, whether you are a fantasy reader or not.
