From Our Editors

With more than 25 thrilling novels under his belt, Wilbur Smith knows how to weave a good yarn, and he doesn't disappoint with Birds of Prey. Equal doses of passion, rage, treachery and glory are tossed into this relentlessly paced novel of high seas adventure set in the 17th century. Richly descriptive and filled with an extraordinary cast of characters, this is a rousing good read. And at this unbeatably low price, it's too good to pass up!

From the Publisher

It is 1667 and the mighty naval war between the Dutch and the English still rages. Sir Francis Courtney and his son Hal, in their fighting caravel, are on patrol off southern Africa, lying in wait for a galleon of the Dutch East India Company returning from the Orient laden with spices, timber and gold... ''The scope is magnificent and the epic scale breathtaking ... Wilbur Smith is one of thos benchmarks agains whom others are compared'' - The Times ''Meticulous research supports constant excitement in a fast-moving tale'' - Washington Post

    Hot! Hot! Hot! 5

I loved Birds of Prey because it was not what I was expecting. It has great characters, lots of detail, and hot...you know. Pity that poor young swashbuckler who falls to the wiles of a wanton vixen! She's no good! Don't do it! But...oh...the *ahem* is hot. OK. But she's evil!!! Now the author is distracting me with how to tell if gunpowder is good or not. Wait! We're being attacked! Come about!!! Sorry. Got carried away there. As you can probably tell, I enjoyed it. ;)

    Extreme Thrills 5

Birds of Prey is the most thrilling novel I've read in a long time. Smith is a master!!! At times I felt I was sailing the high seas along with Hal and his crew. The characters are truly magnificant; loyal, passionate, adventurous, cunning, and at times even vile. A book worth reading over and over again.

Wilbur Smith is a master story teller who continues to put out consistently excellent books. Birds of Prey is yet another spellbinder. Characters are richly developed and the plot, tightly woven. You cheer for the good guys and can't wait for the baddies to get their dues.
Can't wait to get my hands on the next book in the series. Thanks, again, Wilbur, for helping me get lost in the past, where pirates ruled the waters!

This is one of the best books I have ever read. The characters are great and the connections between them are deep and well planned. It is a thoughtful story that will enchant you. You see the main character grow throughout the book. You see young Henry go from child to adult. You will not be disappointed by this book.
