Bite Me: A Stomach-Satisfying, Visually-Gratifying, Fresh-Mouthed Cookbook.

by Julie Albert, Lisa Gnat

September 1, 2009 | Trade Paperback

Bite Me provides the answer to the most commonly asked question, "What's for dinner?"  You won't need an army of sous chefs, a pantry of guava paste or a blowtorch to turn a bag of groceries into a satisfying meal.  Bite Me is 175 dependably delicious, rigorously tested recipes created for the urban and suburban, the aspiring and well-seasoned home cook.

Bite Me speaks to more than just your stomach.  The creation of food is intimately tied to the world outside the kitchen - family, art, music, movies and pop culture are constant sources of laughter and inspiration.  Bite Me is a multi-sensory smorgasbord, a feast for your eyes (including images from legendary photographers David Lachapelle, Miles Aldridge and Melvin Sokolsky), ears (suggested tunes to cook to), nose and mouth.

    A Sheer Delight

This cookbook and I have a special relationship. I saw it at the concept stage; I saw it through rejections from a few well-known publishers; and I saw it come to life as its authors, Julie Albert and Lisa Gnat, forged ahead to produce something exceptional even while experts said a cookbook by an unknown duo would never work.

Bite Me is a sheer delight -- a totally fresh take on delicious every day food and the joy of making it.

The book is stuffed full of fun - music suggestions to cook by, philosophical tidbits, edgy chapter lead-ins, over 175 luscious recipes and loads of mouth-watering shots of irresistible dishes like Best Ever Greek Salad, Apricot Amaretto Chicken, Piquant Pasta Puttanesca, and my personal favourite, Chunky White Chocolate Cranberry Cookies.

For everyone who feels that the definition of a good time is bringing family and friends together with today's comfort foods, Bite Me is the answer.

    Makes cooking fun

    Ingrid Larsen

First off, I am not a chef. I cook out of necessity not pleasure, but healthy flavourful food is important to me. I happened upon this cookbook and decided to give a few recipes a try. Every time I serve a recipe from this book for guests I get major compliments from my friends and inevitably send someone home with the recipe. My husband is LOVING my cooking which in an of itself should earn this book some sort of award! The Southwestern Chicken Corn Chowder is to die for. It is a soup that eats like a meal and is a hit even with my kids!
The dialogue and commentary throughout the book make it entertaining as well. Give Bite Me a try. You won't regret it.

These girls must have telepathy because they know exactly what I want to eat. The Panko coated asparagus is one of the tastiest things I have ever eaten. And as for the book itself it is one of the funniest best looking cookbooks I have seen. Two thumbs up!!!

I have never been a fantastic baker, but the Pecan Pie in this book was unreal. It is dangerously good!!! Loved the Tomato Soup with Grilled Cheese Croutons. Tomorrow night's dinner will be the Meatballs in Marinara sauce.

    Too Many Errors To Buy

The writers of this cookbook either just made mistakes in creating the receipes which obviously were not fully tested or simply do not truly make these dishes.

There are far too many errors on just the ingredient list alone - items missing, not enough pasta for the suggested servings, too much sugar.

I really think that the Authors of these book need to go to the Kitchen have test them themselves - and revise the recipes.

Simply, this cookbook is full of errors.

    It's OK

I too was sucked into buying this book from the amazing pictures and tantalizing recipe descriptions. However, trying out a few, they were kind of just ok. Maybe I haven't tried the ones that really make this book, but it's not a 100% sure hitter. The only other thing that makes me grr is that I totally want to make the cover recipe but none of the grocery stores here sells challah bread in the bakery. Aside from finding a recipe online, it just seems like way too much work! I wish the authors were more sensitive to their audience who may not be able to readily source Jewish fare and to give substitute suggestions.

I own many cookbooks but this is one that I am actually using! Well laid out and easy to follow, Bite Me is filled with eye-catching food photos and simple but delicious recipes. I find myself referencing it now whenever I have an ingredient that I want to find a new way to use. I highly recommend it and plan to make it my next gift for my friend's birthdays.

I first saw this cookbook in Elle magazine for books to watch for. I asked for this cookbook for Christmas and from that day i received, i am inseparable from it. The recipes are easy to follow with readily available ingredients. Although i have not tried all of them, the ones i've tried so far are fantastic and delicious! I just love the creativity of the words, pictures and the whole arrangement of the book. Thanks to two great crazy (in a good way) Canuck sisters, this book has kept me thoroughly entertained! *Muwah

I have been collecting recipes and cookbooks for nearly 4 decades, and "Bite Me" is the cookbook I have been searching for all these years. It is fun, the recipes simple and easily executed, the ingredients readily available, and the results have great visual appeal. While it may not be haute cuisine, "Bite Me" approaches food with a fresh, modern twist that pleases the eye and palate.

    Recipes just okay

From the reviews and recommendations, great pictures and amusing text I was expecting great recipes. Thus far I am very disappointed in the recipes I have used from the book. I have made a meat dish, pasta dish and salad and they were at best just okay. Above all else a cookbook has to have great recipes. I will try a few more before the book becomes a yard sale item.

Now I read cookbooks like books…I am not always reading recipes to make specific stuff, (although this book has lots of awesome specific stuff!!)…I like generally understanding which ingredients go together, best…I like anecdotes and I love to laugh…now who would of thought, someone (I have never met, I might add) would go through all the trouble to write a book just for me...? How thoughtful.

    What a Fantastic Find

    Sandy

I was walking through my local Chapters as I usual peruse the cookbook aisle when i spotted this book that said Bite Me. So I was intrigued. So I picked it up and noticed in smaller writing "A Stomach-Satisfying, Visually Gratifying, Fresh-Mouthed Cookbook".
I just bought it yesterday and haven't had a chance to cook from it yet, BUT visually this book is gorgeous fantastic coffee table book. All the pictures are bright and alive sooo colorful.
I adore the chapter names: Grab me (appetizers), Spoon me (soup), unDress me (salads), Respect me (vegetables), Crave me (pasta & rice), Gobble me (poultry), Catch me (fish), Meet me (meat), Join me (brunch), Fork me (dessert). Within the pages of this book you"ll find lists of music and movies etc about food and Bite me bits which are cute little quotes from shows or comedians that relate to food.
So whether you cook or not this book makes a great addition to any cookbook or coffee table book/ library collection. Once I do cook from it I will let you know how the recipes are.
    Must BUY!!!!

    Fabulous, fun and fool-proof!

This new cookbook is a breath of fresh air! The visuals are larger than life, the script is entertaining - but most of all - the recipes are easy-to-follow (without having to refer to 20 other pages for each ingredient - something I can't stand!) - yet they produce intriguing dishes that would lead one to believe you spent the entire day creating them. Ingredients are found at your local market - and they don't break the bank. Buy this book for the sheer love of practical cooking that will impress - and read it cover-to-cover for a clever, quotable, punchy spin on culinary life on the edge…

I bought this cookbook after cracking it open for a peek in Chapters and not wanting to put it back down. Not only does it have some really fantastic recipes that are not too far out there (I've heard of the ingredients in the recipes), but it also has little snippets of facts, trivia, helpful hints – which is why I had trouble leaving it behind in Chapters – they're addictive. This book makes a great gift – I've already gifted 2 friends and they also loved it. Good buy!!
