Bitten

by Kelley Armstrong

Random House of Canada | September 10, 2002 | Mass Market Paperbound

An erotically charged, addictive thriller from the future queen of suspense.

Living in Toronto for a year, Elena is leading the normal life she has always dreamed of, including a stable job as a journalist and a nice apartment shared with her boyfriend. As the lone female werewolf in existence, only her secret midnight prowls and her occasional inhuman cravings set her apart. Just one year ago, life was very different. Adopted by the Pack when bitten, Elena had spent years struggling with her resentment at having her life stolen away. Torn between two worlds, and overwhelmed by the new passions coursing through her body, her only option for control was to deny her awakening needs and escape.

But now the Pack has called Elena home to help them fight an alliance of renegade werewolves who are bent on exposing and annihilating the Pack. And although Elena is obliged to rejoin her "family," she vows not to be swept up in Pack life again, no matter how natural it might feel. She has made her choice. Trouble is, she''s increasingly uncertain if it''s the right one.

An erotically charged thriller, Bitten will awaken the voracious appetite of every reader, as the age-old battle between man and beast, between human and inhuman forces, comes to a head in one small town and within one woman''s body.

Elena is the only female werewolf who wishes she could fit into the human world. When she leaves her Pack and moves into an apartment with her human boyfriend, Phillip, in Toronto, she thinks that she can actually lead a normal life by day, and a lone wolf running through the streets by night.
But when her Pack calls her back to New York in an emergency, Elena takes a trip back to her home where she finds things getting out of control. There seems to be some "mutts"-new werewolves that have been bitten-causing trouble in her hometown. And when some old faces turn up, Elena needs to figure out a way to save her Pack while staying alive.

Bitten was a good start to Armstrong's Women of the Otherworld series. The plot was well written and kept me at the edge of my seat and the characters were all funny, witty and fun to read about. Armstrong did a good job of leading up to the climax and getting your heart thumping for the final fight. I really enjoyed this novel and I can't wait to get started on the sequel.
    4.5 stars.

(The Chapters-Indigo website has been deleting my ratings so: I gave this book 3 out of 5 stars/leaves.)

In general I liked this book and I do plan on reading the sequels. Overall the story was mostly enjoyable. It was interesting to read Armstrong's take on the werewolf mythos and the adventure was well done, as well as several humorous moments.

My main criticism of this novel is that I found it difficult to accept some of Elena's (i.e. the main character's) choices. Call me strange, but I find it difficult to empathize with someone who finally winds up accepting murder -while I will admit her problem with this was a major theme in the story, she did wind up 'accepting her nature' in the end, as well as that of her mate.

    Just my 0.02$.

Similar recommended titles (given here because of the weird problems I've been having with the Chapters/Indigo website and which they STILL haven't fixed):

-Cry Wolf, by Patricia Briggs (and the prequel story in the collection by various authors, titled 'On the Prowl')
    -Stormwalker, by Allyson James

I feel that Armstrong wrote this book peice by peice with careful thoughts to make this book PERFECTION! The twist between the love with Clayton and Elena, how she loves him so, but he is the one who made her a werewolf. As she still wants to live with humans as a regular, she finds Phillip. They live together for a year, but then Elena must come back to the Pack for a great problem that has occured. Elena falls for Clay agan, slowly forgeting about Phillip. This not only includes romance, but action, and a bit of comedy on the side. I love this book very much! Can't wait to read Stolen.
