Black Jack

by Lora Leigh

St. Martin's Press | March 2, 2010 | Mass Market Paperbound

The Secret Service can't control him. The British government can't silence him. But renegade agent Travis Caine is one loose cannon you don't want to mess with, so his commanders cut him a break-and cut him loose. His new HQ is America's top intelligence force, Elite Ops. His new code name is "Black Jack." And his new assignment is to die for.

She's smart, sexy, scintillating-and one of Elite Ops' savviest agents. Lillian Belle's code name is "Night Hawk," and Travis certainly wouldn't mind flying a few midnight maneuvers with her. But when their mission turns into a red-hot game of danger, deceit, and double-crossed signals, Travis begins to wonder: Can he trust her? Can he resist her?

    Meh!

I loved the first two books in the Elite Ops series, was okay with the third and was disappointed with the fourth so I am not holding out much hope for the 5th. Having said this I will check out the fifth book when it is published in August and hopefully it bounces back because I am intrigued by the character of Nick and want to know more about him.

    I Fold!

As with the previous book in this series Heat Seeker, this one didn't do much for me. Maybe Lora Leigh read some of her reviews from Heat Seeker because at least in this book you could keep track of everyone and their "code names". But in saying that I wasn't big on the name and than in brackets the code name. Didn't feel it was warranted when it was used in that context in some parts of this book. With Heat Seeker it seemed there was too much going on and in this one not enough. I felt the story was weak, although I felt more of a connection with the main characters Travis and Lily.

The storyline is basically finding out who was behind the murder of her father and the attempt made on her life. Lily survives, but is left with no memory of her six years in the unit or of Travis and their time together. He is given the duty to protect her and make sure she doesn't become a liability, while the unit tries to find out who is behind this. Lily is re-introduced back into her former life with her family, with the unit in place searching for answers.

My big question throughout this book was, why couldn't anyone especially her lover Travis tell her what was going on after her memory loss. How much of a danger could she possible be? I'm sure Travis and others in the unit with all their training, could of contained her and assessed the situation from there if she became a high risk? Isn't that what they are trained to do?

I am a big Lora Leigh fan, but these last two books...wow, not happening for me. I think since the Warbucks situation is now answered as to the who, I'll fold on this series and call it a nite!

Agreed!! This series has gone completely downhill and I don't think I will rush to buy any more of them. What happened?? The first two were great and Wild Card is one of my favourite books of ALL time!

Yeah, I totally agree, six years of endangering yourself for the greater good and your still expendable at the end of the day. I also thought her family was just awful till the end and that bothered me.

Yeah, I was kind of wondering the same thing about how they treated her after her memory loss. Nice way to treat someone that has put their life on the line for you over and over again. Just leave them high and dry.....or worse, eliminate them once they are no longer useful to you.

Another in the Elite Ops series, it wasn't a bad novel for a quick weekend read. With LL, she writes a variety of stuff, some tame and some rather hot. This focused on an operative from the mens' team and an operative from the womens' team. In the end, it's another boy loves girl and gets girl in the end.

It was a very good novel; I always enjoy a Lora Leigh. It was action packed and had you reading until the end. Both the main characters had awesome personalities and both work for different agencies that hire them for ops and assassination. They have crossed each other’s path in some missions and have felt a mutual attraction but both will turn to each other when an old enemy arises.
