Bones To Ashes: A Novel

by Kathy Reichs

Pocket Star | June 24, 2008 | Mass Market Paperbound

Temperance Brennan, like her creator Kathy Reichs, is a brilliant, sexy forensic anthropologist called on to solve the toughest cases. But for Tempe, the discovery of a young girl''s skeleton in Acadia, Canada, is more than just another assignment. Évangéline, Tempe''s childhood best friend, was also from Acadia. Named for the character in the Longfellow poem, Évangéline was the most exotic person in Tempe''s eight-year-old world. When Évangéline disappeared, Tempe was warned not to search for her, that the girl was "dangerous."

Thirty years later, flooded with memories, Tempe cannot help wondering if this skeleton could be the friend she lost so many years ago. And what is the meaning of the strange skeletal lesions found on the bones of the young girl?

Meanwhile, Tempe''s beau, Ryan, investigates a series of cold cases. Three girls dead. Four missing. Could the New Brunswick skeleton be part of the pattern? As Tempe draws on the latest advances in forensic anthropology to penetrate the past, Ryan hunts down a serial predator.

    Wow!

Read this in ONE sitting! Just could not give it up... note: I really do not recommend that one reads this while waiting all by yourself - for a very late train in the tiny toy train station of Bracebridge, Ontario (was a bit 'creeped out') ! Well worth your money and time! Each book gets better - can hardly wait for Devil Bones!

    A Real Plot Twister

This is the second Kathy Reichs book I've read and enjoyed it just as much. I loved the story line involving Temperance Brennan's childhood friend that had disappeared many years previous. I found it very gripping and emotional. Since I have not read this series in order so far, it didn't seem to matter in regards to Temperance's ongoing storyline which was great. This book was fast paced and engaging, before I knew it I was done. A side note: since I am a cat lover, loved the name of Temperance's cat "Birdie".

Bones to Ashes has brought Tempe Brenneman back to Canada in this story of an unforgetable childhood friendship. Tempe can't forget the bond she formed with her "summer season" beach friend when she was at the beach in North Carolina, and when Evangeline lived the rest of the year in New Brunswick and they were penpals. Kathy Reichs has captured the value of friendship with lost time over the years and the distance that separates them. Add that to the emotional roller coaster she experiences with Ryan, and it's difficult to put down.
