Bones to Ashes: A Novel

by Kathy Reichs

Simon & Schuster | June 24, 2008 | Trade Paperback

Delivering forensic revelations guaranteed to "chill to the bone" (Entertainment Weekly ), Kathy Reichs plunges Dr. Temperance Brennan into a shattering case from the past: her own past.

As a child, she was told to forget about the missing girl. But some memories don''t die....

The discovery of a skeleton in Acadia, Canada, reawakens a traumatic episode for forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan: Could the young girl''s remains be those of Évangéline Landry, Tempe''s friend who disappeared when Tempe was twelve? Exotic, free-spirited, and slightly older, Évangéline enlivened Tempe''s summer beach visits...then vanished amid whispers that she was "dangerous." Now, faced with bones scarred with inexplicable lesions, Tempe is consumed with solving a decades-old mystery -- while her lover, detective Andrew Ryan, urgently needs her attention on a wave of teenage abductions and murders. With both Ryan and her ex-husband making surprising future plans, Tempe may soon find that her world has painfully and irrevocably changed once again.

Read this in ONE sitting! Just could not give it up... note: I really do not recommend that one reads this while waiting all by yourself - for a very late train in the tiny toy train station of Bracebridge, Ontario (was a bit 'creeped out') ! Well worth your money and time! Each book gets better - can hardly wait for Devil Bones!

    A Real Plot Twister

This is the second Kathy Reichs book I've read and enjoyed it just as much. I loved the story line involving Temperance Brennan's childhood friend that had disappeared many years previous. I found it very gripping and emotional. Since I have not read this series in order so far, it didn't seem to matter in regards to Temperance's ongoing storyline which was great. This book was fast paced and engaging, before I knew it I was done. A side note: since I am a cat lover, loved the name of Temperance's cat "Birdie".

This is a great story about a female forensic anthropologist in a French Canadian City. If you like CSI's, Bones, and other crime dramas, you will enjoy this book.

Always been a great fan of Kathy's and really enjoy all that she does. You can pick up any of her books and understand the characters and that's what I love about it. I find the book reads like a movie and the reader is engaged from the second you read the first line. Her books are perfect for the beach or any other travels. If you like the writing of "Da Vinci Code" you'll enjoy these series of books. Recommended to anyone who enjoys a good mystery.

Oh, do I ever adore Reichs's novels. Her novels show proof that there are no limits to one's imagination - especially when the author knows what she/he is talking about.

Reichs sucks you in with the first sentence and doesn't let go until the very last word. The mystery and forensic descriptions keep you just as glued to the pages as the characters do. Again, Tempe lands herself in trouble when she does something someone asked her not to do. But she can't let go of the possibility that the remains could be those of a friend that disappeared.

Twists and turns and a surprising ending make the entire book worth every single one of its 406 pages. A new twist with her ex-husband Pete could have come at a better time, and a twist with Ryan has you feeling heartbroken for Tempe - I cried right along with her, felt her heartache deeply. But her sister comes to somewhat of a rescue, even if she, yet again, manages to freak Tempe out with yet another disappearing act. Absolutely perfect - except for something unresolved between her and Ryan. I refuse to get into more detail than that - I don't like writing reviews with spoilers. Suffice it to say that her MMP of her next novel, Devil Bones, can't come fast enough!

If you're a forensics/csi nut as much as I am, then this series is an absolute must read! I can't get enough! LOL, but thanks to Reichs, I can fill in the time watching Bones!

I have been a fan of Kathy Reichs since I first saw her books!
I am now really excited that she has a T.V. Show "BONES" now on the air!

It's a lot of fun to watch!

This was the first novel by Kathy Reichs that I read. I'm a fan of the TV series Bones so I had to give it a whirl. I couldn't put it down. I haven't enjoyed a book like this in a while. Now I am reading Break No Bones and will be moving on to another one of her novels very soon.

I first discovered this author in 2006 and ended up reading all her books in the same year. Like the others, this book is really well written and the intrigue is keeping us hook until the end. I like that she details everything so that we understand better the plot. I can't wait for the next one to come out!

This is the newest book in the Temperance Brennan series and it is right on track. The story starts with missing girls and unidentified bodies and ends in a web of pornography and pedophilia. This is a top-notch entry in the series. We are given a look at Brennan's childhood in this book and her sister Harry is back after an absence of several books. I find Harry incredibly annoying so wasn't too pleased to see her again. Brennan's personal life also takes a nose dive and I really don't like the path her relationship has taken. But now I find myself at the end of this series and in the position of having to wait for the next book to be published. I'll be looking forward to it.

I totally agree with your thoughts on Harry! She drives me crazy! Also, I wasn't thrilled with how things were left with Ryan either. The book definitely left me wanting more. I have to say, this is the only series that I have really gotten into! I absolutely love it!

Bones to Ashes has brought Tempe Brenneman back to Canada in this story of an unforgetable childhood friendship. Tempe can't forget the bond she formed with her "summer season" beach friend when she was at the beach in North Carolina, and when Evangeline lived the rest of the year in New Brunswick and they were penpals. Kathy Reichs has captured the value of friendship with lost time over the years and the distance that separates them. Add that to the emotional roller coaster she experiences with Ryan, and it's difficult to put down.
