The Book of Night with Moon

by Diane Duane

Grand Central Publishing | March 1, 1999 | Mass Market Paperbound

Rhiow seems a perfectly ordinary New York City cat. Or so her humans think -- but she is much more than she appears. With her partners Saash and Urruah, she collaborates with human wizards to protect the earth from dark forces and maintain the network of magical gateways that connect to different realities. But amid this amazing secret animal world lies a danger that threatens not only the cats of the world, but humans as well.

Let me first say that Diane Duane is one of my favorite writers. Ever since I first read her Star Trek novels in the 80's, I've looked forward to her novels. Her keen sense of humor ran through all her books, enhancing the experience.

This book's plot is old and very simple (yet another fantasy book with a "mysterious dark force" as the menace...). Also, as a person who likes both dogs and cats, I found the pro-feline writing got on my nerves a lot. If you love cats, you would probably enjoy that more than I did.

I'm not bothering with the sequel to this one. I see Duane has written some more Trek novels, I might try those.
