Book Of Longing

by Leonard Cohen

McClelland & Stewart | March 27, 2007 | Trade Paperback

Leonard Cohen is one of the great writers, performers, and most consistently daring artists of our time. Book of Longing is Cohen's eagerly awaited new collection of poems, following his highly acclaimed 1984 title, Book of Mercy, and his hugely successful 1993 publication, Stranger Music, a Globe and Mail national bestseller. Book of Longing contains erotic, playful, and provocative line drawings and artwork on every page, by the author, which interact in exciting and unexpected ways on the page with poetry that is timeless, meditative, and at times darkly humorous. The book brings together all the elements that have brought Leonard Cohen's artistry with language worldwide recognition.

    Floored me

I'm not a fan of poetry, but somehow I took a huge leap here by buying Cohen's Book of Longing before I'd even cracked the cover. His work--astounding. Nothing short of breathtaking. His comprehension and fusion of language is impressive--you really have to just experience this, he doesn't let you down.

Only Leonard Cohen can maintain his world-class status as an artist, philosopher, poet, singer, song-writer, arranger, producer and eternally a magnet for ladies of all ages. One can only hope that this book will be followed by song.

i must admit - i haven't finished reading it... but it seems to me that this is a very different cohen than we're used to. fortunately, not different enough, because it is beautiful as his other books - although perhaps in a different way. this one seems more about the forgetful, self-deceiving aspects of ideal romantic love, in contrast with what seemed to me more accurate, true representations of real relationships (in previous books). i would highly reccomend this book to all cohen fans (although if you're a fan, you already have it...)

I thoroughly enjoyed his poetry (as always!) and the little illustrations were nice touch too. I'm sorry to hear Mr. Cohen had to come out of retirement, but at the same time I am awfully glad this book got published. Any Leonard Cohen fan will find this a pleasure to read.
