Booky: A Trilogy

by Bernice Thurman Hunter

Scholastic Canada, Ltd | September 1, 1998 | Trade Paperback

Beatrice Thomson doesn''t mind her funny nickname. It makes her feel special, which is important when you''re the middle child: not the smartest, or the best-looking, or a boy. The Depression years are hard ones, with her father out of work and the family struggling to make ends meet. But irrepressible Booky, with her big imagination and even bigger plans, can tackle anything. A sharp-eyed kid can find plenty to see and do without spending a cent. Even if it does get her into scrapes!

I read these books when I was in grade 5. In grade 6, I had the wonderful opportunity to meet Beatrice Thurman Hunter. She came and gave a talk to our class, and I've never forgotten her. This year, I've purchased the trilogy for my own daughter, and I know she will enjoy Booky as much as I did- as a bonus- I get to re-read the books.

    A Canadian Classic

    Heather Hunter

Whenever I want to hear her voice again, I read "Booky" or any one of her 17 novels. She was my mother and my inspiration as a writer. My legacy is to complete her unfinished work, which I did in The Girls They Left Behind (Fitzhenry). Again the main character was herself, a teenager living in Toronto during World War 2. I have just published her "first and last" novel, Kimberley of Millpond (available at hunterbooks.ca) depicting life in a small town in the 1950's. Bernice Thurman Hunter is the voice of Canada, showing us the way it was. Her books should be read around the world. So warm and funny, they can be read again and again by all ages.

I remember in grade 5, many many years ago, our teacher read these books at the end of the day. We really got into it, curious to know how a young girl survived in Toronto during the depression, and loved every moment.

Well written, poignant and funny, this is a MUST READ for people of all ages. I highly recommend this to parents - read it along with your children.

From the Critics

"Hunter can recapture exactly how it felt to be a funny, spirited, naïve, noticing kind of kid scampering through Toronto''s Depression years on an empty stomach and skinny legs." (Toronto Star)
