Born To Rock

by Gordon Korman

Scholastic Canada, Ltd | January 1, 2007 | Trade Paperback

Leo Caraway -- high school senior, president of the Young Republicans club, 4.0 GPA, future Harvard student -- had his entire future perfectly planned out. That was, until the X factor. As in Marion X. McMurphy, aka King Maggot, the lead singer of Purge, the most popular, most destructive band punk rock has ever seen. He''s also Leo''s biological father. When Leo discovers that his real father is a punk rock legend, he is disgusted. Not only is Leo not a punk rock fan, but he believes the X factor (the Maggot blood that is running through his veins) is a dangerous time bomb just waiting to explode. And sure enough it does -- Leo stubbornly defends the unlikeliest of people, thereby getting himself falsely accused of cheating on a test. Because of the blemish on his record, the once star pupil finds his scholarship to Harvard taken away. So he hatches the crazy plan of going on tour with King Maggot for Purge''s summer revival tour, all the while secretly hoping to convince Maggot to pay for his tuition. But life on the road is even crazier than Leo ever bargained for, and before the summer is out, he will finally discover the surprising truth about his dad, his friends, and most important, himself.

I've liked Gordon Korman's writing style for a while now, but I haven't been too impressed with his Young Adult offerings. "Born to Rock" started out rather like "Son of Interflux" for me, but got much, much better! The story follows Leo who after he gets caught suppossedly cheating on a test loses his full scholarship to Harvard. $40, 000 a year is way beyond his parents modest means and he has to come up with some other way to get the money. Enter Marion X McMurphy. McMurphy is the mysterious man listed as Leo's father on his birth certificate, but Leo has never met him. By chance one day as he's checking out his friends blog he comes across that name. Turns out, McMurphy is also known as King Maggot, the front man of the punk band Purge. Leo suddenly has a grand plan to get that tuition money! What he doesn't expect is that one summer spent as a roadie on tour with Purge will earn him a lot more than just 40 grand....

Pretty decent story, though a lot of it was quite predictable. Korman's a great writer, though, and he's got a fantastic sense of humour.

    A life discovered

Although this book is not yet available to the general public I received an advance reading copy and could not put it down if my life depended on it. Which it did. This book is the compelling story of a straight edge Young Republican who discovers the truth of his true paternity in his best friends essay on none other than punk rock. The revelation catapults him to create a relationship with the one half of his DNA that could provide him with the one thing he needed: money. Along the way he discovers his real father, the person who is his best friend and begins to understand that life can truly be unpredicatable.
I absolutely loved this book. Not only because I found myself totally enraptured but because there are so many unforseen revelations along the way. It also really makes you think about the path that others think you should take and the one that is blazened on one's heart.
