If you're into dark/badass fantasies AND a mushy romantic too then I definitely recommend Born of Night. The idea of a dark universe crawling with humanoid criminals is compelling... The plot is steadfast, the two main characters were great, and you'll love the supporting roles of Nykyrian's friends/allies.
I will agree though that the repetitive nature of the saving, hiding, and love scenes were tedious and at times. I felt that I forgot Nykyrian was 'the most lethal man alive' at times because his abilities/character were often downplayed by Kiara's exploration and his own ever-soft moments. But hey, Kenyon said she wrote it years before her prime and psh, I couldn't put it down.
Also really liked how the attention was focused on Nykyrian and Kiara, where every chapter focused on, at least, one of them and they would always think about the other ...classic romance driver!

    Could've been better

This is the first book of The League series. This book starts off with a trained assassin named Nykyrian quitting The League, which is a group of highly trained assassins that keep order in the world. The mission he was supposed to do was kill a mother and her child. Not wanting to do that he decides to quit, but there are consequences to leaving the league. If you do you will be kill. Not fearing death he rips out his tracer and visit's a friend telling him what happened.

Move forward nine years later when we meet Kiara Zamir, a princess whose fathers political career has put her in danger. She has been kidnapped but some men who want her dead, but their space ship has been attacked. So Kiara struggles to get out of captivity, though gets saved by someone. They try to get her out thought get a warning the ship is about to explode. A second man comes in and just rips the cuffs apart picks her up and brings her to safety. Though she knows who this man is, it's Nemesis, the most feared man in the universe.
They bring her to their place where they have their own army called the Sentella, who keeps The League and other assassins in line

When Nykyrian brings her back to her home planet, he drops her off and never looks back, though her father would like them to protect her. His partner Syn say's no because Nykyrian said that they have to much work. Though there's more that meets the eye between Kiara and Nykyrian though both of them fight it.

Nykyrian has had such a bad childhood that he doesn't let anyone in. He can't trust people, doesn't sleep unless necessary, doesn't have any real friends except the people he has working for him. Kiara has to break through all that to get to him, though it isn't easy.

I liked this book, though it wasn't great. It wasn't as hot and smoldering as it could've been. It had real potential, though didn't live up to it. There are two more books in the series and I'm hoping they have a little more to them. The characters we're so messed up you had to feel for them. They all had their problems though work through them. Good book!

I loved Born of Night! It seems that I haven’t been able to find a really good series lately, something that I can’t seem to put down. With this novel I was not disappointed. I was hooked from the very start. I loved the all the characters, especially Kiara’s. It was interesting to see how she reacts as she learns about the dark past Nykyrian endured, and how she is able to make his heart beat again. I can't wait to read Syn’s story!
