Brain That Changes Itself: Stories Of Personal Triumph From The Frontiers Of Brain Science

by Norman Doidge

Viking USA | March 20, 2007 | Hardcover

An astonishing new science called neuroplasticity is overthrowing the centuries-old notion that the human brain is immutable. Psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, Norman Doidge, M.D., traveled the country to meet both the brilliant scientists championing neuroplasticity and the people whose lives they?ve transformed?people whose mental limitations or brain damage were seen as unalterable. We see a woman born with half a brain that rewired itself to work as a whole, blind people who learn to see, learning disorders cured, IQs raised, aging brains rejuvenated, stroke patients learning to speak, children with cerebral palsy learning to move with more grace, depression and anxiety disorders successfully treated, and lifelong character traits changed. Using these marvelous stories to probe mysteries of the body, emotion, love, sex, culture, and education, Dr. Doidge has written an immensely moving, inspiring book that will permanently alter the way we look at our brains, human nature, and human potential.

This book provides an in depth discussion of how the brain works. Norman Doidge has broken down the various functions of the brain into sizable chunks for us to understand and has supported his argument by real life studies. It refutes the theory that our brain is immutable and educates us that our brain is ever changing. Earlier, it was understood that every part of the brain had certain functions but now that perception has changed. When a particular area of the brain is affected, the other parts of the brain can be trained to take over the role that the affected part was playing. The effectiveness of this process is up to each individual. Real life examples in the book demonstrate that the brain can continue to be trained and developed but we must facilitate its growth by continuous learning and exercise. Reading this book inspired me to set out a schedule to spend time everyday doing mental exercises to continue to sharpen my brain and consequently, my thinking skills.
