Breaktime (definitions Series)

by Aidan Chambers

Random House UK | May 30, 1995 | Trade Paperback

Refreshingly unconventional, an exciting story and a witty game played between author and reader.

It all begins with a challenge. Morgan sneers at Ditto for relying on books as his sole source of information, and defies Ditto to prove that literature is ever related to life. Ditto takes up the challenge, writing an account of what is happening to him. His father has a heart attack, he makes friends with a couple of burglars, gets involved in a drunken brawl and has a life-changing encounter with the girl of his dreams--. True? Or just a story? Excellent adolescent fiction

This book was required reading for an education course at UVic, to my subsequent delight. The lead character Ditto uses multiple writing styles, combined with matter-of-fact self-examination and humor, to lay to rest his adolescence (and his virginity!), while dealing with a number of painful and perplexing issues. All this is couched within the guise of a contest with his best friend, who questions the value of literature in this increasingly electronic world. An excellent book for male or female readers 13 to 17 (and the young in spirit like myself!)
