Built To Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies

by Jim Collins

HARPERCOLLINS PUBLISHERS | August 8, 2002 | Trade Paperback

Drawing upon a six-year research project at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business, James C. Collins and Jerry I. Porras took eighteen truly exceptional and long-lasting companies and studied each in direct comparison to one of its top competitors. They examined the companies from their very beginnings to the present day -- as start-ups, as midsize companies, and as large corporations. Throughout, the authors asked: "What makes the truly exceptional companies different from the comparison companies and what were the common practices these enduringly great companies followed throughout their history?"

Filled with hundreds of specific examples and organized into a coherent framework of practical concepts that can be applied by managers and entrepreneurs at all levels, Built to Last provides a master blueprint for building organizations that will prosper long into the 21st century and beyond.

This is a great book! However, if you're looking for a "cheerleading" or a "pep-talk" this isn't the book you're looking for. It can be a little dry, but it is extremely informative. I really appreciated the "no-nonsense" tone of the book. I liked the approach that the authors took in putting the book together. They created credibility from the very beginning. A great book for serious business people that want to create a succesful, lasting company!

This is the best business book I have read. It is easy to say what is different between good and bad companies but they have been able to show the subtle differences between good and great. In all industries, sports, in life, there is such a small difference between average, good and great. Most people can be good on their own but to be great takes work and learning constantly. You will learn from this book.

The authors have definitely done their homework. This book has been accurate for the past 6 years. It explains in layman terms what it takes to build a visionary company. Too many big corporations rely on the CEO, this book makes it clear that you must build a mission statement that the business will grow around.

Collins and Porras spent six years studying eighteen visionary companies. "Built to Last" presents their findings on the habits of these visionary companies. These findings are presented in an easy to read and enjoyable fashion. Several interesting and relevant examples are given to prove each major point. While most of the findings are common sense some will surprise even the most experienced of business people. Required reading for anyone interested in contemporary business thinking.
