The Canterbury Tales (Barnes & Noble Classics Series)

by Geoffrey Chaucer
Translated by: Peter Tuttle
Introduction by: Robert W. Hanning

Barnes & Noble Classics | March 1, 2007 | Trade Paperback

The Canterbury Tales, by Geoffrey Chaucer, is part of the Barnes & Noble Classics  series, which offers quality editions at affordable prices to the student and the general reader, including new scholarship, thoughtful design, and pages of carefully crafted extras. Here are some of the remarkable features of Barnes & Noble Classics:
All editions are beautifully designed and are printed to superior specifications; some include illustrations of historical interest. Barnes & Noble Classics pulls together a constellation of influences—biographical, historical, and literary—to enrich each reader''s understanding of these enduring works.

Pilgrims on their way to worship at the shrine of Saint Thomas à Becket in Canterbury stop at the Tabard Inn. Representing a cross-section of medieval English society, the group includes a knight and his squire, a prioress, a friar, a miller, and a wife. To amuse themselves on their journey, they agree that each will tell a tale. These stories—by turns bawdy, hilarious, scurrilous, romantic, heroic, and moving—reveal a great deal about the tellers and the world they live in, which, despite the distance of six hundred years, seems remarkably like our own. Indeed, the structure of The Canterbury Tales and the sophisticated, intricate interplay between the stories, their narrators, and the general narrator (himself a complex comic character) give the book its strikingly modern flavor.

Often called the first book of poetry written in English, Chaucer's masterpiece is also the first anthology of English short fiction, one that will resonate with readers for as long as folly and courage, deceit and generosity, love and jealousy remain part of the human personality.

Robert W. Hanning is Professor of English at Columbia University, where he has taught since 1961. He has published The Vision of History in Early Britain, The Individual in Twelfth-Century Romance, The Lais of Marie de France (co-translated with Joan Ferrante), and Castiglione: the Ideal and the Real in Renaissance Culture (co-edited with David Rosand), as well as many articles on Chaucer's poetry and other medieval and Renaissance subjects.

Peter Tuttle''s most recent poetry is Looking for a Sign in the West, published by Back Short in 2003.

This edition of The Canterbury Tales is a great translation from the original middle english text. The stories in here will keep you entertained no matter your interests; from murder, to lechery and folktales, Chaucer's got it all!

This tour de force from literary genius Geoffrey Chaucer serves as the foundation of storytelling for the common man (and woman). There is bawdiness aplenty -- perfect for fans of Adam Sandler and Tom Green (provided they don't mind tackling some Middle English) -- to go along with traditional adventures and fables. This mix ensures that there is something for everyone, despite the absence of the girls with guns that Paul Grimes yearns for in his 12th of January review. The lessons and morals in the Tales are as relevant today as they were in the author's time.

It is unfortunate that Chaucer passed on before he was able to complete the work, leaving us to speculate about what other adventures may have appeared in the Tales. Given that Chaucer's death was in 1400, Paul Grimes' wish that the author does better next time is rather unlikely to come true.

Even though The Canterbury Tales is an incomplete work, it still stands as a testament to the power of creativity and is a tribute to the heights that literature can reach.

Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales" tells us more than mere pilgrims' tales. First, the Middle English of Chaucer's time makes us realise and appreciate the evolution of the English language. The irony, sarcasm, and wit of Pilgrim Chaucer as the Narrator delights the literary buds of our human intellect. Curious minds should take delight in learning about the social and moral fabric that are woven throughout each pilgrim's character and the tales that is spun by that pilgrim; that is the society of Chaucer's time. This is not a book that teaches you how to, say, fix a leaky faucet; this book is the reason why you should leave that leaky faucet, to be transported into another realm, which precedes and shares our time.

a famous book? yes. a good book? no. In an attempt to relive the lives of pilgrims from the medieviel times, Chaucer has gone for the jugular here and missed completely. If you are going to write a story involving 30 different people, it would be a good idea to introduce a couple of outrageous characters to spice up the tale. I suggest Mr Chaucer cut the narrative and up the tempo in his next novel. More action, less talk !! Guns, Girls and exotic locations are the way to get noticed nowadays Mr. Chaucer. Better luck on your next magnum opus.

If you like to listen to stories about people, read The Canterbury Tales. It is a masterpiece, but not for the faint of heart. It's best to read a modern translation since Chaucer's English is tricky to understand. Chaucer died before he finished his tales and those of us who enjoy his writing lose out because of it.
