This is the ninth installment in the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind, acting as both a finale for the eight books prior to it and an intro to a trilogy - two more books are being anticipated. Terry Goodkind is an amazing author that gives his readers characters with enough depth to drown in, a rich new world, and a plot that captivates and ensnares the senses. Unfortunately, this is all made clear in the first few books. The series that took off with such a rich and colorful start seriously lagged towards the last half of it, with the exception of 'Faith of the Fallen' which again (finally) introduced some new elements. 'Chainfire', however, did a spectacular job of picking up the pieces. 'Naked Empire' left you with a profound sense of redundancy - the same themes, the same enemies, the same endings - and it was rather boring after reading the same plot four times over. ‘Chainfire’, however, begins fresh, throwing you straight into the action as opposed to a slow buildup that the last couple books were characterized by. The fresh plot even introduces an enemy with a new twist to it, and this one does not die by the end of the book! For any Sword of Truth fan this is significant change because all of the others have presented a smaller nemesis underneath Jagang (Richard's arch-nemesis) that was presented and quickly disposed of by the end of the book. With a fresh plot, exciting twists in the story, and a new element introduced, Chainfire is a must-read even for those who found the books previous beginning to lag. It's wonderful to see Goodkind exercising the skill that practically emanated from the first and second books again. I recommend it whole-heartedly ... just read the rest of the series first, or you'll get lost in the deep plot he's laid down thus far.
