Change of Heart: A Novel

by Jodi Picoult

December 2, 2008 | Trade Paperback

The acclaimed #1 New York Times bestselling author presents a spellbinding tale of a mother''s tragic loss and one man''s last chance at gaining salvation.

Can we save ourselves, or do we rely on others to do it? Is what we believe always the truth?

One moment June Nealon was happily looking forward to years full of laughter and adventure with her family, and the next, she was staring into a future that was as empty as her heart. Now her life is a waiting game. Waiting for time to heal her wounds, waiting for justice. In short, waiting for a miracle to happen.

For Shay Bourne, life holds no more surprises. The world has given him nothing, and he has nothing to offer the world. In a heartbeat, though, something happens that changes everything for him. Now, he has one last chance for salvation, and it lies with June''s eleven-year-old daughter, Claire. But between Shay and Claire stretches an ocean of bitter regrets, past crimes, and the rage of a mother who has lost her child.

Would you give up your vengeance against someone you hate if it meant saving someone you love? Would you want your dreams to come true if it meant granting your enemy''s dying wish?

Once again, Jodi Picoult mesmerizes and enthralls readers with this story of redemption, justice, and love.

June Nealon's life has not been easy. Her first husband was killed by a drunken driver and she was left to raise their daughter. June marries the policeman who looked into the accident and is 7 months pregnant when a day labourer kills her husband and her daughter.

Now, twelve years later Shay Bourne is on his last days on the death row. Claire, June's daughter is at death's door because of a faulty heart. Shay wishes to donate his heart to Claire. Other characters include Father Michael a conflicted spiritual adviser and Maggie a competent lawyer and spinster.

This book has elements of other stories in it: The Green Mile by Stephen King and The Chamber by John Grisham. Does this constitute plagiarism? It is a story about religion, the death penalty, salvation, vengeance and regrets. This is a typical Jodi Picoult story even to the twist at the end. I found this story to be quite unbelievable. However, the concepts were interesting to read about and provoked a lot of thought about the issues

    Amazing

I really liked this book. I read it in 2 nights and by the end, I was laying down on the bed with a roll of toilet paper, sobbing away. The book was raw with emotions. It did, however, resemble The Green Mile a bit. In either way, I really enjoyed the book and would recommend it to anyone who wants a little controversial reading that will question their beliefs on what they think is right.

Another great topic discussed. I love the twists that Picoult writes into everye one of her novels. I honestly never see them coming. My only complaint about this book ( the reason I didnt give it a full 5 maple leaves!) is there was too much relgious discussion and less emotional discussion of what the implications of taking a murderer's heart would be...

This is the 4th book i've read by this author, and i fall more in love with her writing each time. This book was incredible. It was very emotional, and touched on a few subjects that some people/authors would steer away from. The Book is surrounded around Shay Bourne a young man that is being convicted of a double murder. The State of new Hampshire hasn't had the death penalty in 69 years, a jury is now facing a decision of changing that. After 11 years in prison, things start happening in the prison and all eyes are at shay. I can't say much more without giving to much of the story away but this book will have you hooked from page 1. Jodi Picoult delievers another shocking ending. She has a way of describing and delievering her characters so that you can feel and understand each and every one of them. This truly is a fantastic read. I would recommend it to anyone!

Loved this book, knew from the start the "twist" same as her other novel My Sister's Keeper but it was still a good read.

Too Much Like the Green Mile

I was sorely disappointed by this book. The only other Picoult book I had read was My Sister's Keeper and I was expecting this novel to be of similar quality. I was wrong! This book was unoriginal and basically a rip off of Stephen King's Green Mile serial novel. Don't waste your time on Change of Heart - just read the Green Mile...it's much better!

I wish I would have listened to the other reviewers that mentioned how similar the two books were! Don't waste your time or money on this one!

Honestly, I had never heard of Jodi Picoult before this book. I saw it in the bookstore and had to put it on my Christmas list. It was one of those books that you couldn't put down but didn't want to finish. I was reading it when I was travelling and a friend of mine told me about the list of great titles published by her. Since then I've read 8 of her other titles. I need to take a break from her now and move on to someone else. I'm certain she will return until I've read her entire collection.
