    Awesome Book

I have recently read this book, and I have found that it is very informational and offers a different outlook on how we look at our past. The Author, Erich Von Daniken convinces the readers that humans have been visited by "space travellers", a.k.a Aliens, in the not so distant past. He gives many examples on where they visited, but asks the ever so popular questions in the book, why and how they came here. I have suggested this book to my brother and friend, and they are both currently reading it. Thank you Erich Von Daniken for giving me such an interesting book to read.

    Extraterrestrial visitors?

This book talks about a theory about space travellers visiting earth thousands of years ago and interpreted as gods by the ancient civilisations. Questioned are mysteries concerning ancient maps, pyramid building, strange tools, cave drawings, possible landing strips, sculptures, roads, ruins, symbols, etc. For example, how did very primitive people move and cut 100 ton stones, which would be difficult to do even today with our modern technology?

Ignore previous comments made by others stating that Von Daniken 'claims' anything. He does not. He poses many questions for the reader to consider. Did I buy into his suggestions? No, not really, but, that's the great thing about this book. He doesn't ask you to.

    Dated but entertaining

If you ever follow one book with a near religious fanticism, try not to make it this one. Though very thought provoking and intriguing, this book has sadly aged terribly, as not only have many of the arguements been disproven over the years, but some of Dunniken's glib remarks, such as "moon colonies of the future," and "the sons of our generation will travel the stars" (writen in the sixties). Another problem is Erich's self contradiction. His entire arguement is based on the fact that everything else is only right because the majority says so, and that questioning of theories is progression, but just so long as it is not his theories. A good example of archaeology gone bad.

This book hardly deserves the time needed to write a review. One can only hope that it will raise your skepticism if you shoose to read it anyway. The nonsense presented in this book has been refuted many times, yet the reprints continue with little correction to the misinformation presented. The most optimistic conclusion would be to hope that the author misguided. None of the theories in this book withstand rational scrutiny. Some may find them plausible or exciting - because we love the fantastic, but that does not make them true. The book belongs in the fantasy section. Do your own research - read decent well-researched books on ancient history and archaeology on the topics discussed; you will realise that von Daniken's theories are built on leaps of logic that even ancient astronauts or big-eyed beans from Venus would not be capable of. He is the founder (well maybe Velikovsky was) of a long line of pseudo-archaeologists writing sensational books that ignore contrary data, massage existing data, and draw unsupportable conclusions. That is a disservice to the public and an impediment ot real knowledge. Pseudo-archaeology is more concerned with promoting its own worldview than pursuing truth.

    Chariots of the Gods

This is a new trade edition of the bestseller which has sold seven million copies worldwide since 1968, its author claiming that Earth has been colonized by visitors from space who became the gods of mankind. The book still offers some challenging alternatives to the tenets of scientific orthodoxy regarding the early history of mankind. However, many of its conclusions need to be revised in the light of discoveries made in different fields over the last thirty years.
