    A Must Read Children's Classic!

Reason for Reading: Read aloud to ds.

I'll keep this one short. There must be thousand's of reviews already of this modern classic. The edition that I have is the hardcover reprint with the gently colourized original illustration by Rosemary Wells, a beautiful book and a keeper for my personal library. This was my first re-read since my original reading as a child and it struck me again as being a wonderful book so full of feeling, even though I'd seen the cartoon movie year after year as a child. I was surprised that Fern wasn't really that big a part of the story as I had expected her to be and Templeton was all Paul Lynde to me. I heard his voice every time he spoke!

This was my son's first exposure to Charlotte's Web. I've kept him away from the new version of the movie purposely until we'd read the book and the animated version just doesn't show up on TV like it used to. I wouldn't say say he absolutely loved it. He didn't cry are feel bad at the end, at all. It was very much "c'est la vie" for him. But he did laugh at all the funny parts and enjoyed Wilbur as a character the most. Oh, and the geese, he loved their double talk! So he enjoyed the book and we've got a hold on the animated movie version at the library to watch and will watch the newer real life version if he's interested afterwards for comparison. (I personally do not like talking animal movies). For myself it was a great enjoyment to re-acquaint myself with the original book and remember why E.B. White was such a beloved children's author. Why did he have to leave us with only three children's books, though?? That is the sad part. The Trumpet of the Swan is still my favourite of the three.

Having a dual form of dyslexia I did not learn to read until later in life. Thus I never read children's books while a child. Maybe that is why I read so many still today. I read this as part of a children's literature course in university.

It is an interesting book, about friendship, commitment, compassion, change and death. As such it deals with a lot of the big questions of life in ways a child can grasp.

For me the most moving part was when Wilber confessed to Charlotte that he did not like the thought of her as a blood sucker, towards the end of her life. Only true friends can be that open and honest.

The book is a powerful tale of true friendship and how our close friends can transform not only us but those around us.

(First written as Journal Reading Notes in 1999.)

Charlotte's web is a touching story about a little farm girl who saves the life of a pig. Wilbert, the pig, discovers the world aroung him and gets himself into the spotlight with the help of Charlotte, the friendly spider. They quickly become friends until the fall. This book is E.B White's most appreciated work. Anybody could reread it over and over again withour getting board.

"This is a story of the barn. I wrote it for children and to amuse myself. It is called 'Charlotte's Web' and I will read it to you." With that simple introduction, author E.B. White began the 1970 recording of his enduring, universally beloved tale, his 1953 children's classic about a little girl, a humble pig, a soulful spider and abiding friendship, tenderly wrapped in nature's poignant ebb and flow. This captivating re-release of that recording is found treasure, vividly alive and fresh as a country breeze. Once heard, it's difficult to imagine Wilbur, Charlotte, Fern, cranky rat Templeton, and all the other quirky animal and human inhabitants of Zuckerman's farm and environs with any other voice but White's. Warmed by the accents of his native New York and his lifelong love affair with rural Maine, White's performance is as humorous as it is touching, a gentle observation of barnyard miracles, selfless sacrifice and a young girl's first steps away from childhood. The 3 hour plus unabridged recording ends with an eloquent afterward, written by children's author and scholar Peter E. Neumeyer and read by George Plimpton. It's a fascinating portrait of White's life and work, from his childhood love of nature and words, to his success as one of The New Yorker's most respected essayists, as well as his landmark contributions to children's literature. SOME BOOK

If someone asked me to read a book about talking animals that wasn't "Animal Farm", I'd probably laugh in their face. But after reading this I'd seriously have to reconsider. EB White took something as simple as a pig who is meant to be eaten, and escalated it into a story about friendship, loss, and courage. Although Charlotte is only a spider, she is one of the greatest heroines I have read about in children's lit (and possibly in adult lit as well).

Let me tell you a little about this book. Wilbur was lovingly raised by a girl named Fern. But now he's a barn pig. He's bored and lonely - until he meets Charlotte, the beautiful grey spider who also lives in the barn. Charlotte thinks of a wonderful way to save wilbur...

Charlotte's Web was my most favorite book when I was growing up. I read this book over and over. I am 30 now and I even bought it again a couple months ago to read it again. I also bought another one for my daughter so she could have her own copy. She has started reading it and loves it also.

This is an excellent book for children of elementary age. It's entertaining, demonstrates values (i.e. loyalty, friendship, caring and many life lessons), teaches children the life span of animals and how animals are used to help man survive. I would say this book should be recommended reading for every Grade 4 or 5 students in every classroom.

I fell in love with this book the first time i read it, when i was in gr, 3 i think that i have read it over 25 times in the past 2 years. I felt as though when i read it that the stroy was really real that charlotte could talk and help. It made me see spiders in an other light! It is i think a true work of art. ANd the best part is that it is great for any child of any age, even adults would like it. I think that if you haven't read this book, that you should because even though it is make believe it help you understand life and the goodness of people. When i first read it i came to school the next day and told everyoen that charlotte was my best friend. My peers just looked at me funny, but that is the way the book makes you feel.. like all the characters are your best friends and for the time that you read that book they let you in their perfect world.

Love transforms us all. There is no way that one can read about the love that Wilbur has for Charlotte and not be changed in some way forever. It is a love that celebrates difference. It is a love that survives, despite complications, beyond Charlotte's short life. I make sure to give a copy of this book to all the important young people in my life. It is the best book I've ever read because of its message that all beings are worthy of love.

My age is 7. This was the thickest chapter book I've read. It was a bit hard for me but I love the story. I saw the movie, then went and got the book the same day because I liked it so much. My favourite part was when they swang on the rope into the air. This is still one of my most favourite books.
