About the Author

Born in Mount Vernon, New York, E. B. White was educated at Cornell University and served as a private in World War I. After several years as a journalist, he joined the staff of the New Yorker, then in its infancy. For 11 years he wrote most of the "Talk of the Town" columns, and it was White and James Thurber who can be credited with setting the style and attitude of the magazine. In 1938 he retired to a saltwater farm in Maine, where he wrote essays regularly for Harper's Magazine under the title "One Man's Meat." Like Thoreau, White preferred the woods; he also resembled Thoreau in his impatience and indignation. White received several prizes: in 1960, the gold medal of the American Academy of Arts and Letters; in 1963, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian award (he was honored along with Thornton Wilder and Edmund Wilson); and in 1978, a special Pulitzer Prize. His verse is original and witty but with serious undertones. His friend James Thurber described him as "a poet who loves to live half-hidden from the eye." Three of his books have become children's classics: Stuart Little (1945), about a mouse born into a human family, Charlotte's Web (1952), about a spider who befriends a lonely pig, and The Trumpet of the Swan (1970). Among his best-known and most widely used books is The Elements of Style (1959), a guide to grammar and rhetoric based on a text written by one of his professors at Cornell, William Strunk, which White revised and expanded. White was married to Katherine Angell, the first fiction editor of the New Yorker.

"This is a story of the barn. I wrote it for children and to amuse myself. It is called 'Charlotte's Web' and I will read it to you." With that simple introduction, author E.B. White began the 1970 recording of his enduring, universally beloved tale, his 1953 children's classic about a little girl, a humble pig, a soulful spider and abiding friendship, tenderly wrapped in nature's poignant ebb and flow. This captivating re-release of that recording is found treasure, vividly alive and fresh as… read more

Charlotte's Web was my most favorite book when I was growing up. I read this book over and over. I am 30 now and I even bought it again a couple months ago to read it again. I also bought another one for my daughter so she could have her own copy. She has started reading it and loves it also.

Having a dual form of dyslexia I did not learn to read until later in life. Thus I never read children’s books while a child. Maybe that is why I read so many still today. I read this as part of a children’s literature course in university. It is an interesting book, about friendship, commitment, compassion, change and death. As such it deals with a lot of the big questions of life in ways a child can grasp. For me the most moving part was when Wilber confessed to Charlotte that he did… read more

    SOME BOOK 5

This review is from: Charlottes Web (Trade Paperback)

If someone asked me to read a book about talking animals that wasn't "Animal Farm", I'd probably laugh in their face. But after reading this I'd seriously have to reconsider. EB White took something as simple as a pig who is meant to be eaten, and escalated it into a story about friendship, loss, and courage. Although Charlotte is only a spider, she is one of the greatest heroines I have read about in children's lit (and possibly in adult lit as well).

This is an excellent book for children of elementary age. It's entertaining, demonstrates values (i.e. loyalty, friendship, caring and many life lessons), teaches children the life span of animals and how animals are used to help man survive. I would say this book should be recommended reading for every Grade 4 or 5 students in every classroom.

    A Great Book !! 5

My age is 7. This was the thickest chapter book I've read. It was a bit hard for me but I love the story. I saw the movie, then went and got the book the same day because I liked it so much. My favourite part was when they swang on the rope into the air. This is still one of my most favourite books.

Charlotte's web is a touching story about a little farm girl who saves the life of a pig. Wilbert, the pig, discovers the world aroung him and gets himself into the spotlight with the help of Charlotte, the friendly spider. They quickly become friends until the fall. This book is E.B White's most appreciated work. Anybody could reread it over and over again withour getting board.
