Chasing Harry Winston: A Novel

by Lauren Weisberger

Downtown Press | May 5, 2009 | Trade Paperback

Now in paperback-from the bestselling author of The Devil Wears Prada and Everyone Worth Knowing-a "glitzy Manhattan romp" (People) about a trio of best friends who vow to dramatically change their entire lives within one calendar year.

Meet Emmy, Leigh, and Adriana. Best friends since college, each has seen her share of career foils and romantic foibles over the past decade. Now, as they approach thirty, they're looking toward their future...but despite all the success and luxuries they've attained-they're not quite sure they like what they see.

When they are each alone for one reason or another on Valentine's Day, the trio makes a pact. Within one year, each woman will change the thing that most challenges her. For Emmy, whose boyfriend of five years just left her for a personal trainer, it will be to find romance-or a fling-in every foreign country she visits. For Leigh, a book editor with a dream boyfriend and dream apartment, no change seems necessary-until she starts to notice a brilliant and brooding man named Jesse. And for commitment-phobic, drop-dead-gorgeous Adriana, her goal is to have an engagement ring and a house in Scarsdale. Each woman starts the first day of the year with the best of intentions-which is exactly why the pact goes immediately, and exceptionally, awry.

Filled with delicious insider details, Chasing Harry Winston whisks readers into the heart of an elite world, where friendships will be tested to the point of breaking, and showcases Weisberger's best storytelling efforts to date.

    Should only be a movie...

I enjoyed this book for what it was... chick lit. This book required no thinking and lacked in plot development. I felt there were a lot of gaps in the 3 characters' story lines.
Emmy was boring and had a revelation at the end that was very predictable.
Adrianna was completely unrelatable and in no way a possibility. I appreciated her candor and abilities with men.
Leigh was probably the character that was easiest to identify with. I felt what she felt. Many women feel the way she does about her life
All in all, it was ok. I feel it would make a better movie than a read.

    Gave this one a 3.5...

This book idled among my TBRs for 2 years [HB]. Made several starts, but then laid it aside. However, I should have perservered! Definitely chick-lit, but, contrary to other reviewers, I found the 3 central characters very well done & realistic! In fact, having read this one, I will get a copy of the 2nd by this author [Everyone Worth Knowing] and re-read The Devil... I recommend this as a summer read, BUT do not do it in intervals...read it when you have the time to go from the 1st page to the last...You will enjoy it! [and I do know women like this....]

    Third time not the charm

The story was weak, the characters unlikable and whiny and the course of events was all a little too "neat" to be satisfying I found the whole story to be an exercise in complaining. Not impressed, was expecting more from the author of Devil Wears Prada

I loved "The Devil Wears Prada", therefore I was very disappointed in this book. The story line is flat and somewhat predictable - don't bother reading this book, let along buying it

    A Real Hoot

Anyone that reads chick-lit, Lauren Weisberger has to be on top of your list. She definitely shows a real talent in captivating her audience by drawing original and interesting sagas in the lives of her female characters.

This latest is centered on Leigh, Emma and Adriana, three single women in their late 20's living in Manhattan. The novel focuses on each individual as the girls self analyse themselves expressing their need for constant validation for their good looks and sex appeal. They are determined to catch eligible prospects at any cost. No holds barred.

This novel can't be taken too seriously; I found it to be a hoot at times, terribly funny. The characters are depicted in a very narcissistic way, superficial and immature, highlighting the worst of the female stereotypical characteristic in each of them.
The feminists may feel offended by some of the ways the women are perceived. I found their adventures hilarious.

This is a fast, an easy read, a real soap opera script one that may tickle your fancy……

    Surprisingly Not Bad!

I didn't think I would like this book but I actually enjoyed it. The witty author of The Devil Wears Prada writes a novel about 3 very different friends in search for something to fulfill their lives. The book slightly reminds me of Sex and the City but it's very different in style and plot. The book circles around the stories of 3 friends - Emmy, Adriana, and Leigh. Emmy is dumped by her boyfriend, whom she intended to marry and have children with. Adriana is beautiful and moves from one man to another within weeks but her mother keeps nagging her that her beauty won't last forever. And Leigh is a young publisher who has the perfect life with the perfect man but all changes when she meets Jesse Chapman, a young handsome writer. The 3 make a pact to drastically change their lives within the year. Despite the changes, struggles, heartaches, and victories, this book is ultimately about the unique friendship of 3 very different women. This book was definitely better than Everyone Worth Knowing but not as good as The Devil Wears Prada. I think the book would've been better if Weisberger given more character development of the 3 characters and their relationship with each other. I couldn't really tell that the 3 friends were very close, I just naturally assumed it so at parts, their relationship seemed artificial or not believable.

    disappointing

I was a big fan of both The Devil Wears Prada and Everyone Worth Knowing (other Lauren Weisberger Novels) and so I was really excited to read this one, and it was just a real let down. It wasn't as witty or clever as Weisberger's other works. It was predictable and rather boring. I guess it was cute, but not up to the standards I had prematurely set. I wouldn't read this book again but if you enjoy all sorts of chick lit, you may feel indifferent to this novel. It doesn't make a lasting impression in the least.
