Choosing to Smile: Inspirational Life Stories of Three Friends who Happened to Have Cancer

by Michelle Rickaby, Glenda Standeven, Julie Houlker

Choosing to Smile Publications | February 1, 2010 | Trade Paperback

This book is about three friends who chose to face life’s adversities with a smile. It tells the individual life stories of three women, and how their lives intersected when each was diagnosed with cancer. As they fought the disease, they came to realize that the key to happiness involved making a conscious decision to face each day with a positive attitude. The stories share how three women responded to life-altering challenges by living and loving, and by refusing to let cancer control them. The book shows how they chose to smile, for however long and difficult the journey.

From the Author

We wrote this book in the hope that it would help others to feel less alone when facing adversity. We wanted people to recognize that we all have the power to make choices about how to deal with life's challenges. We also wanted people to know that cancer is only one part of an affected person's life, not all of it.

"I like to tell people that cancer was just a bump on the road for me. I had many incredible life experiences before I lost my leg, and have made even more wonderful memories after."
-Glenda Standeven, diagnosed with bone cancer in 1987

"We want people to see us as who we were before our diagnoses and who we became during out time with cancer. But, most importantly, we want people to see who we are now."
-Michelle Rickaby, diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma in 1988

"Cancer doesn't define us. We have love and hope, and that's all that matters."
-Julie Houlker, diagnosed with breast cancer in 1995 and passed away on January 21, 2011, from metastatic breast cancer
