City Of Bones

by Cassandra Clare

Margaret K. McElderry Books | March 27, 2007 | Hardcover

When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder-much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing-not even a smear of blood-to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

This is Clary's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It's also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know. . . .

Exotic and gritty, exhilarating and utterly gripping, Cassandra Clare's ferociously entertaining fantasy takes readers on a wild ride that they will never want to end.

I have already read Clockwork Angel and Clockwork Prince, and I was fascinated by Shadowhunters. I decided to get into The Mortal Instruments, and I absolutely loved City of Bones! I'm looking forward to reading City of Ashes.

I ws honestly surprised by how Cassandra Clare could come up with such an amazing plot and such an amazing conclusion. I was shocked at a lot of parts, especially the ending ; it was so unexpected ! I don't really like books that I can easily predict what will happen, and it was very hard to know what was going to happen everytime I turned a page! This IS a must-read! Once you read this book, you'll be hooked on the series!

I absolutely loved this book, it is amazing. I would recommend it to anyone who is thinking about reading it. I am not embarassed to say that I am mildly obsessed with Shadowhunters and this series. Clary was an excellent main character, I loved her and Jace from the start. This was a fast paced book and I was never bored. The series has a different plot line from others I have read. AMAZING!

This is the first book in the Mortal Instruments Trilogy and I don't have enough words for it. It's a story about a world that is hidden from the humans where these Shadowhunters fight the demons that have entered the earth.

Clary is our main character and she discovers that she is one of them when her mother went missing and a demon attacked her. As she was drawn into this world so did I when I started reading the first pages. The author, Cassandra Clare has a certain way with the words that makes you want to live into this magic world.

I found all the characters enjoyable and for the first time I think I found a book that combines funny scenes, dark elements, fast paced action and deadly gorgeous men all thrown into the mix to make the most delicious book. Add to that a very complicate love triangle and you have a hit!

There is a lot of drama in this book but the events and the characters justify each action taken in this book.
The writing style is my favourite. It's written on third person narrative which made the story stand up. This way we could get a glimpse of every character in this book.

Overall this book was amazing! City of Bones will keep reading you with the hot action and twists till the very late hours.

My opinion: this is one of the best books out there right now. Not much else I can say without spoiling some of the plot other than the fact that once you pick up this book, you will not put it down.
And that guy on the cover is just delish.

    Fast Paced Urban Fantasy

I have heard people raving about Cassandra Clare for quite some time, but for some reason, it took me a while to get to City of Bones. Better late than never, right? I loved reading this book, even more than I thought I would because I am not usually a big fan of books that involve love triangles. I was able to read it on the beach this summer, which was perfect because it made a great, entertaining read.

To start with, I enjoyed Cassandra Clare's writing, her style is vivid, imaginative, descriptive and exciting. I could really feel the world that she created and how she layered them so there could be two worlds at once, the one that most people can see and an exotic world filled with Shadowhunters, demons, werewolves and vampires.

I also liked how Cassandra Clare explored the notions of good and evil, and how she used Clary, a naive fifteen year old girl to do this. Clary is young and tends to see things in terms of good and bad, black and white, right and wrong, but the world is not always like this. Clary gets challanged on these beliefs, learning that there are shades of grey and this is almost too much for Clary to wrap her head around, something I think that most teenagers experience.

For the most part, I enjoyed the characters in City of Bones. Clary, as I said before, is young and fifteen - she rushes in, doesn't always think and is fiercly loyal, which I think is fairly realistic for a girl her age. She also needs to be rescued a lot, and I am hoping that changes as her character grows in the next books of the series.

The other characters are good also, even if some of them are a bit stereotypical. Most, however, are well developed and show some sort of growth. Jace, the sarcastic, macho, obnoxious Shadowhunter, can be a bit much sometimes. I am not sure why everyone loves good looking jerks so much.

There are also some great plot twists which will keep the reader turning the pages. Many of these are foreshadowed in the book, which makes them even better. Overall, there is a nice balance between action and "down time" as well as some humour thrown in.

I can really see young adult readers enjoying this book, as well as adults who enjoy this type of urban fantasy genre.

I had this book lent to me by a friend when I was looking for something to read. I got to about chapter two and then quit. It wasn't for me. I then read Clockwork Angel and I loved that one and so I went out and bought the boxed set for these books. I probably tried reading the first one four times in total and finally I forced myself to finish it. It was painful to read, honestly. Clary is not very personable. She's a bit annoying and I don't really see how Jace can be so attractive. They're just average to me, nothing special. The writing style made me want to stab my eyes out, it was awful! For example, the werewolves. It was simply written, "hey, look werewolves" no description of what they looked like or anything.
I think with some more detail, a little more unique characters and better writing, this book could have been very, very good. I know that Cassandra Claire can do it, she did in Clockwork Angel, it just wasn't in this book. I'm not sure if I'll read the rest in the series, maybe if I don't have anything better to read, they are supposed to be better than this one.

Love this series!!!! I picked it up when no other novel of the series was out yet. The ending to the first novel threw me off a but but I was already hooked and had to read the other novels when they came out. Thankfully I did as they are fantastic, and makes you questions if stuff like this does go on!

When I picked this book up it was with the set at walmart and it was $30 dollars so even tho I couldn't read what the series was about it was really hard to beat the price. I didn't read it for a while till I was at home and bored and figured I would read it just to get it off the shelf. Turns out it was actually pretty amazing and I could not put it down. I was kicking myself for not reading it sooner. I finished it that day and for the next two days finished off the series. If you want a book that will suck you in this is the one to read. Be sure to buy the rest of the series because you will want to know what happens next.

can see why Cassandra Clare and Holly Black are friends (or at least seem like they are, I don't know them personally - unfortunately!) because they have the same wonderful dark, sarcastic humour. The tone of their books are similar, with that edgy-funny feel to an action/adventure story with magic.

The dialogue (especially in the first half) felt incredibly real; unlike the last couple of books I've been reading. These were more believable young characters in a fantasy than the characters in realistic fiction. I love that, when the magic and mythology doesn't take away from the humanity of characters.

The mythology of this series is certainly ambitious. So intricate! I don't think I would want to take on so many types of supernatural beings in one novel, I'd spend half the time on exposition and bore the reader. Clare never bored me though, she wove the world around the story seamlessly. I had a hard time putting the book down, because I was so immersed in the world.

This is a series I've been meaning to read for what seems like ages, and part of me regrets waiting so long to discover it's level of awesome- but another part of me is glad because YIPEE I already own the next book and have the 3rd waiting for me at the library. That's the beauty of being a latecomer to a book, you don't have a long wait for sequels.

I didn't like the last fourth of the book nearly as much as the beginning. This was largely because I predicted what would happen and was disappointed to be right. I wanted so badly to be wrong about a certain plot twist!! I find it to be icky and reminiscent of the worst part about Star Wars (which I love anyway) and a lot of soap operas. However, the plot twist I'm not a fan of was handled very nicely, and I'm still eager to dig into City of Ashes

This was a book that I had purchased to read months ago at a friend's suggestion. I finally decided to start it last week. About 20 pages in and I was kicking myself for letting it just sit on the shelf and collect dust for several months. The great cast of characters immediately pulled me in like a magnet. The story kept a great pace and didn't lag once. There was a couple times where I had to pause to catch my bearings in a "woah! what just happened" moment. Totally enjoyable, fans of the supernatural will love this.

After having recently finished The Hunger Games Trilogy, I searched for more information about the series, discovering that there is a bit of a feud brewing between this series and the latter. My response to learning about the war of the fictional worlds was to decide which side to stand on and thus, I picked up The Mortal Instruments series. Though I am happy to remain neutral in the war between the two series, I am certainly happy that I picked up City of Bones.

While I was not blown away by the plotline itself, nor the writing style of Cassandra Clare, she has managed to create a truly unique and enthralling cast of characters! Clary and Jace - amongst many others - are such interesting people to follow and to figure out. The relationship that Clare has spun for the two heroes is the stuff of trashy daytime soap-operas and it makes the page-turning very easy. Being the first book in a series, I'm hoping that this installment is simply laying the groundwork for spectacular things to come. I am looking forward to following Jace and Clary on the rest of their supernatural journey.

Ms. Clare does an excellent job of pulling you into the story. I wouldn't say the plot (story line) is extremely original, but the world where it takes place and the qualities of all the characters are! It's all actually very charming, intriguing and entertaining.

There is a full cast of characters here. CLARY, is an awesome ordinary girl, funny and strong (although you wouldn't tell this right away), who has no idea who she really is and the story mainly develops around her quest to discover herself. SIMON, is Clary's best friend; he's very human, kind of a nerd, and a bit awkward, but pretty cool all in all. He's THE human in the story. LUKE, an awesome guy, part of Clary's family, the kind of "cool uncle" we would all like to have! And JACE… yup… for me it's all about Jace! He's your first stop to the world of the Shadowhunters. His golden good looks, some arrogance, but also very caring, all makes him just irresistible.

Among the Shadowhunters, you also have ISABELLE, a hottie, sarcastic, kicking butt and shutting you up type of girl. ALEC, Isabelle's brother, who's pretty cool, although not the nicest person around. And last, but not least, VALENTINE, the bad guy! Although I believe (and agree with some other readers/reviewers) that Ms. Clare could have made him more evil. He is evil, but just not enough… in my opinion anyway. (Hard to explain the feeling right here). He just doesn't sound scary enough. But this doesn't ruin the story at all. Just some detail!!

Besides the Shadowhunters, their world is full of other cool creatures, such as our classic ones: werewolves, vampires, and warlocks. They all participate in creating this magical and exciting world of the Shadowhunters!

And what's an action and exciting story without some love in it, right? Of course there is some romance! But I won't spoil it for you! I'll let you find out for yourself! Just know that the various romantic threads in the story have you going back and forth over who you're rooting for!

To conclude, and although I LOVED the story, I must say, Ms Clare concluded her first book with a big slap on the face! LOL… this is NOT a bad thing! Just letting you know that when I reached the end, there was a moment where I was like "NOOOOOO !!!!!" and "WHAAAAAATT ??". This is not bad at all! It was just SURPRISING! I was not really expecting it. And you will probably want book two, City of Ashes, at hand.

You will definitely feel your heart racing through the story!
    HAPPY READING!

I thought I would never be into the science/fiction, fantasy type books. But I was completely wrong, and too quick to judge. I'm definitely glad I gave it a chance. I know there is a lot of rave about this book, and many people either love it or hate it. Everyone has their own opinions. It really depends on what type of person you are, and what type of books you normally read. This could be way out of your 'norm', but you can't knock it until you try it.

This was an amazing adventure to a different world. This story was full of action, drama, fantasy, and most of all LOVE. It's beautiful from beginning to end.

Cassandra Clare's writing style is truly what tied the novel together. She chose to excite the readers with heavy words, and strong sentence structures.

Clary was an amazing character, and not just because she's the main character. But because of the heart behind everything she did. She was cautious, but she never thought without the desire of her strong-willed heart.

Jace was a great character in his own way as well. At first he seemed so hot-headed. Of course as the story progressed, he started to open up more- only because of Clary.

The most surprising part of the book was near the ending. Just when I thought it couldn't get worse. I was secretly rooting for Clary and Jace to be together. Although they did end up together, it just wasn't the way I had hoped for them. It will definitely be a hard adjustment for them both, but they are both very strong, and the love they share is strong enough to keep them together.

Having already read the first book in the new prequel trilogy to this series, The Infernal Devices, I starting reading this book with some preconceived notions. Cassandra Clare blew them completely out of the water. The world was familiar, the weapons, the battles and the environment. Humans, werewolves, vampires, warlocks, Shadow Hunters, down worlders and mundane all mixed up in events together. But being set in our time was an amazing new twist on something I was familiar with. And yet something so new and unique I found myself picking up the book again and again when I should have been doing other things, and saying to myself just one more page, or till the end of this section or chapter but could literally not make myself put the book down.

The characters are amazing and the world creation so complete, so seamless, and so believable, that, as a reader, you feel as if it might not be fiction but a clearer view of reality than most of us have in our day-to-day life. The books in this series are so well-written that you will read the books back to back and maybe even read them again and again. This book was the first one published by Cassandra Clare and the skill shown, and mastery of the writing craft, is amazing for a first novel.

It is set in a world with a battle between light and darkness, and a group of humans who try to keep that which is evil from destroying our world. These shadow hunters are humans who have been blessed with the blood of an angel. They have claves around the world and work to keep the peace between other species and with each other, and to protect humans. The major players seem to be warlocks, vampires, werewolves, fairies and the shadow hunters, also known as Nephilim. Our main character is Clary Fray, a young girl who finds herself mixed up in a world that she never knew existed, but that she was destined to be a part of. She is a strong character who is learning who she really is and what she will do with her life.

This world by Cassandra Clare is one I will visit again and again, as new books come out and rereading the ones I have read over and over, and I cannot give books a higher recommendation than that. They made my to-be-read-again list.
