In the Victorian era The Orient Express was the ultimate way to prove your status in a strict class society. This book brilliantly deals with a document that was put together whilst four very important and distinct people were travelling on the train in 1865. Sir Benjamin Disraeli, Florence Nightingale, Isambard Kingdom Brunel and Charles Dickens all happened to be travelling to Paris on the very same date. Indeed, they shared the same 1st class carriage. The four of them, realizing their obvious inteligence and wit, decided to gather after supper for a quick game of whist( which is the inspiration for the game Clue) During this highly competitive but ultimately friendly game, they drew up a document that was to change the way Work Houses were run. This lead to the development of a social housing bill in parliament and the forming eventually of the NDP. The book crisply details the four famous people and is full of humour and detail of the times. Highly recommended.
