I don't really have anything against this book. I even gave it three stars because I didn't hate it. However I found that, like "Friday Night Knitting Club" it was fairly predictable. Not in the way where I knew exactly what was going to happen, but I would get to a plot point in the story and just... not be surprised by it.

Comfort Food is the story of a middle aged celebrity on the cooking channel (this story's "Food Network") who is being told she's not 'hip' enough and not getting ratings so the producers shake up her show and pair her with an up and coming beauty queen turned foodie. There is strife between the two women. There is family issues between the main character and her daughters. There is lots of people being asked to do things they don't want to do because the producers see it as a great idea.

If you are a fan of this sort of genre. Very 'womyn powah!', where the men sort of fall into background artwork... then this is totally the book for you. I won't read it again, but it was alright.

There is tremendous comfort to be had in reading the aptly titled Comfort Food by Kate Jacobs. Although there are few surprises in this story of Gus, a 50 year old TV cooking show hostess who has found herself in a bit of a rut, this is precisely what makes it work. I have tremendous respect for books that embrace what they are and do it well, without attempting to aspire to what they may perceive as "greater heights". This book is the written version of a romantic comedy which in my mind accomplishes the same task; the sole purpose of each is to entertain and provide an escape from reality.
Initially I found Jacobs' writing style a distraction, but one that I was quickly able to overcome (the only exception being the use of the expression "thank you very much"). Her writing worked with the story which sweeps the reader along with just enough plot and perspective to maintain interest, but not so much that it is impossible to put down. Comfort Food provides a welcome respite for those whose lives or reading material has become too full of complexity and mire.

Comfort Food, by Kate Jacobs, is the interesting tale of a woman named Gus Simpson - CookingChannel's host/foodie extrordinaire.

Will Gus' world come crashing down when her producer adds a little bit of spice, co-host Carman Vega, to the show - Eat, Drink and Be?

This books is all about family and food and perfect if you are looking for an easy read to enjoy.

Not my favourite book by Kate Jacobs - I preferred The Friday Night Knitting Club - but it will do.

Let me introduce you to Gus, her two daughters - Aimee & Sabrina, Troy, Oliver, Porter, Alan, Carmen and Hannah. They were certainly a pleasure to get to know.

    That's my food for thought!
