After reading the impractical Humanure Handbook ---with its Mr.
Turdley and just ONE recommended way of doing things that neither
my wife, my kids or my local health agent will allow--and two others
that just featured nice overviews, I was pleased and grateful to be
given this book by a fellow solar installer. This book helped me figure
out the differences between the various manufactured systems, how to
choose a greywater system, and even how to make my own system for
a place I visit in Costa Rica. It didn't just show me one design (such as
how to sh** in a bucket, like Humanure, I know how to do that) but
several. What's more, I showed it to my regulator who had to approve
the system and wasn't keen to (we had a holding tank and a decrepit
cesspool). Anyway, between the write-ups of the manufactured
systems and the information about many ways to make your own, I
can't imagine a better resource. If I have a complaint, it's that it gave
me too many options without telling me which one to
buy or make. We now have one system in with both a dry toilet and a
one-pint-flush toilet, and a small system of my making in the shop. In
Costa Rica, my friend just finished building another system in the
community using two designs from this book. They work great!
So if you're serious about installing a composting toilet, GET THIS
BOOK! If you just want a funny toilet book, look elsewhere.

    An OK book

I do not believe this book was very well researched compared to others on the topic, like the Humanure Handbook.

The last review I read on this book raised a good point. One of the co-authors also sells compost toilets and is therefore somewhat biased towards commercial kinds, especially the ones he sells.

A beautiful book with swell photos and illustrations that will look great on your coffee table and won't offend your guests. An excellent addition to a thorough library on the subject, especially if you are already convinced that a commercial composting toilet is what you want.

The reason I can't give it a "5" is that I felt that, while home-brew systems are discussed, the content was a little biased towards commercial systems. When you consider that one of the two authors sold them for a living (and perhaps still does) this is less than surprising.

Contrast this to Joe Jenkins' "Humanure Handbook" (also available from Chapters) which explains a more down-to-earth approach that involves a bit more work, but can be implemented for little more than the cost of the book.

Both books include valuable sections on graywater.

If you can afford it, get 'em both. If you think expensive fibreglass will make better compost (it won't!) get this one. But if you prefer to get down to the nitty-gritty, and/or your funds are limited, go with Joe!
