Confessions Of An Ugly Stepsister: A Novel

Confessions Of An Ugly Stepsister: A Novel

by Gregory Maguire

HARPERCOLLINS PUBLISHERS | September 20, 2010 | Trade Paperback

In the lives of children, pumpkins can turn into coaches, mice and rats into human beings. . . . When we grow up we learn that it''s far more common for human beings to turn into rats.

We all have heard the story of Cinderella, the beautiful child cast out to slave among the ashes. But what of her stepsisters, the homely pair exiled into ignominy by the fame of their lovely sibling? What fate befell those untouched by beauty . . . and what curses accompanied Cinderella''s exquisite looks?

Set against the rich backdrop of seventeenth-century Holland, Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister is a novel of beauty and betrayal, illusion and understanding, reminding us that deception can be unearthed?and love unveiled?in the most unexpected of places.

Not as pleased with this novel as I was with Wicked, but it was still worth reading. Not one of his best pieces of literature (if you would like to call it that). This book really has no thinking to it; it’s more of a book that you can read over different spans of time and not be lost in the story. Nothing of what you’d call a “page turner”

This was my favourite book by Gregory Maguire. I loved the characters and the storyline. When I read Wicked and Mirror, Mirror, it took me awhile to get through them, but I could barely put this one down. Well done!

Imagination NEVER ceases to amaze me. I am continually floored by the power of Maguire's imagination. His first work, Wicked, took the the Wizard of Oz to an entirely new level. Cinderella will now follow in those footsteps. The prose is conversational which keeps the story moving. The twists are delightful and revealing. The ties that can be made to modern life are uncanny. And the point of view that the tale is told from -- one of the ugly stepsisters -- gives a whole new meaning to the gift OR curse of beauty.

From the Critics

[A] bewitching story...Confessions has its roots in a fanciful tale--the Cinderella story--but it teases out motifs deeper than the generic fall-in-love-and-marry-the-prince-happily-ever-after....Witty and wise Adult and sophisticated, his musings on beauty, ugliness, magic, reality, and imagination explore how our past follows us always and shapes our self-perception.
