Confessions of a Shopaholic

by Sophie Kinsella

Random House Publishing Group | November 4, 2003 | Mass Market Paperbound

Millions of readers have come to adore New York Times best-selling author Sophie Kinsella's irrepressible heroine. Meet Becky Bloomwood, America's favorite shopaholic - a young woman with a big heart, big dreams…and just one little weakness.

Becky has a fabulous flat in London''s trendiest neighborhood, a troupe of glamorous socialite friends, and a closet brimming with the season''s must-haves. The only trouble is that she can''t actually afford it-not any of it.

Her job writing at Successful Savings not only bores her to tears, it doesn''t pay much at all. And lately Becky''s been chased by dismal letters from the bank -letters with large red sums she can''t bear to read-and they''re getting ever harder to ignore.

She tries cutting back. But none of her efforts succeeds. Becky''s only consolation is to buy herself something ... just a little something....

Finally a story arises that Becky actually cares about, and her front-page article catalyzes a chain of events that will transform her life-and the lives of those around her-forever.

Sophie Kinsella has brilliantly tapped into our collective consumer conscience to deliver a novel of our times-and a heroine who grows stronger every time she weakens. Becky''s hilarious schemes to pay back her debts are as endearing as they are desperate. Her "confessions" are the perfect pick-me-up when life is hanging in the (bank) balance.

Although many may say that they hate Becky, I love her. I think the way she convinces herself everything will work out is completely hilarious. I love her state of mind or not worrying and trying to act completely cool when she knows something is going wrong.

This book is the kind of book that you are embarssed to say you read and absolutely loved it. I thought this book was so funny. I loved every word of this book and would recommend it for someone who is looking for a light read and a pick me up.

  • Working as a Financial Journalist with zero interest to her, Rebecca Bloomwood (aka Becky) lives her daily life in a dream world. She ignores the letters of demand from Credit Cards and provides unimaginative excuses to her bank to avoid meeting with them. She believes that everything will sort its self out and goes shopping. With a need to purchase anything that is on sale, Becky's debts continue to grow while she offers financial advice to the Average Joe. Her advice is mostly snippets of information that she has researched for one article or another. Not fully understanding the consequences and responsibilities of giving advice until her lacking information causes some family friends to lose out on a large windfall. Jumping into action, Becky aims to right her wrongs.

Luckily for Becky, things do start to work out by the end of the book. In a manner of speaking.

I recommend this book for anyone who likes easy reading and humorous books.

"OK. DON'T PANIC. Don't panic. It's only a VISA bill. It's a piece of paper; a few numbers. I mean, just how scary can a few numbers be?" I've been here before (in fact I've just found myself here again), I'm sure you've been here before, perhaps all of the western world has been in the shoes of Rebecca "Becky" Bloomwood, except maybe your shoes were not Jimmy Choo's. This novel was recommended to me by my friend aka "all I ever read is chick lit material" and after I gave in with The Devil Wears Prada (which was also her suggestion) I was hesitant to start this book which also looked quite shallow, but instead what I found was a great read and confidence in my friend's suggestions once again.

The novel starts off with a series of collection notices, which introduces the main character; it's a smart way to introduce a novel and to introduce us to the utterly charming Rebecca Bloomwood. We know that she's flawed and in major debt and has a serious shopping problem, without even meeting the main character. Becky at the age of 25 has found herself in major debt with overdrafts, credit cards and store credits all building up to catastrophe. Ironically, Becky works full time as a financial journalist. She lives in a swanky flat in London with her socialite best-friend, Suze, and she's often late with the rent. Her spending habits are outrageous; this is a girl who spends £1000 in shoes alone. The main characters are all flawed in some way except for the perfect, dashing, (predictable) Luke Brandon, owner of Brandon Communications, whom Becky meets while trying to buy a scarf for £125 and embarrassing herself when she finds out that all of her credit cards are maxed and she has only £100 in cash thus borrowing money from Luke. Throughout the novel we see her spiral into deeper debt and battle with her addiction to shopping.

This novel strikes a cord in my heart for I feel at times I am Becky Bloomwood myself. Spending dollars I don't have on pens and pretty notepaper, books and hats and especially CLOTHES. The main character is easy to relate to and you almost feel guilty for enjoying her debt and the fact that she's not as perfect as she seems. Her logic is lacking but her closet definitely isn't; I often found myself envious of this fictional character and her ability to hold her head up high while she asks for more money on her overdraft while battling with Luke Brandon on TV, not to mention her massive closet.

The novel is what it is and doesn't shy away from that or try to discourage you from the fact that this is a novel about shopping. You know what the plot line is about from the title alone. It's realistic, witty and charming and just good fun. The narration is okay, the tone light-hearted, the language: adequate, but Kinsella never wished to win a Booker Prize for this novel, it's supposed to be a fun read and fun it was indeed. So go ahead and pick up a copy of this book and don't be afraid to "Charge it" after all that's what Becky would do!

P.S.: there are like 5 books to this series… doesn't Kinsella get tired of writing? She's the next Danielle Steel or Nora Roberts (both of which I can't stand by the way).

I decided to read this book after I watched the movie, I really like the movie so I thought book must be good as well. I was really surprised to find out how much they changed in the movie but was still happy I read the book because this book is just sooo entertaining. Both the movie and the book are really funny!!

You must buy this book. It's not a desire, you need it, it's essential. This is like the way of living of Becky. This book was incredibly funny, Becky is so carefree about all that it's pathetic but soo funny. She didn't mind lying because she don't even realise she is doing it. Anyways it's an awsome book, I couldn't stop reading it...and laughing.

I picked up this book because the movie was coming out and I like to read the books first. I found the main character highly annoying, because I know no one who has that little self control. This book does have some fun moments but they are surrounded by Becky's extreme stupidity that is highly annoying. The movie is way better then the book in this case.

Pretty decent book. I really enjoyed the story and the comic relief after reading God knows how many romance novels straight. The plot is pretty realistic...I can relate to the situation, but not quite to the extent of maxing out my credit cards and ignoring the bills. Also, I found it that the main character is quite ditzy, which sort of deterred me from reading this book. But nonetheless it was great. I want to watch the movie just to see how it compares.

    One. Hour.

Like, I'm normally a fast reader. But I'm not THAT fast. This book was just so great. The style of writing was good, the characters were interesting, and I found myself being sucked into the plot. I saw a lot of myself in Becky, which at times scared me (I've done crazy things to avoid facing money problems, too!) and made me laugh.

If you liked the movie, read the book. It's better. Or, read the book anyways. It's just good.

....I really hated the ending. I mean it had no ending, it just stopped. Overall it was a really good book and had me laughing the whole way through. I am planning on seeing the movie once it comes out and I would definitely recommend the book!
